This is my newest piece. It was built for a customer that will take possesion this week. It's based on a Vaquero frame and chambered in 475 Linebaugh. The barrel is 4 3/8 with a 5 shot Bowen cylinder and base pin. The barrel has been dovetailed for an ivory bead from sight and the rear beneath the sighting groove has been dimpled and an orang dot applied for quick sighting. Hammer and trigger are jeweled and it has a full action job with Wolff springs and a round hammer strut. The action is as tight as you can get it and still have it function. It's been linebored and has an oversized cylinder latch. It was converted to a Bisley grip and modified. It also has a steel ejector housing and a bullsey ejector for easier ejection under stress. The trigger brakes at a crisp 2 1/4lbs. I'll let the new owner tell you his opinion of the gun and the name he's given the gun and why, and also why ejection under stress could be an issue. This gun is a beast, I couldn't get it settled in the mechanical rest to where it would stop shifting and after 15rds I had to stop.

That handgun does look like a beast and I look forward to reading the owners opinon on it.

Ya know...there ain't no way I'd pull the hammer on that beautiful beast! I shot the 500 Linebaugh...once...ouch! I was going to AK on a handgun hunt for moose. I ended up taking a nice one w/ my .358 JDJ. A friend loaned me his .500 and I took it for a ride. Took one shot and returned it. I was more afraid of the gun then the bears he was warning me about!!

I do love the looks of that gun but it wouldn't make it out of my safe very often.

Shoot what Whit and I do and the .475 is rather pleasant.

However I am going to go against my friend and bash the Bisley grip---yes, yes, it will eat you up. Sore hands and busted knuckle. A few might love them but I hate them with a passion, even a .44 Bisley hurts me.
The biggest misconception in the gun world is that the Bisley handles recoil better. It was made for one hand shooting with wimp loads to get the barrel in line better to the eye.

Not a misconception at all. Those who have and shoot Bisleys, obviously prefer them over the plow handle. The biggest misconception is that plow handle somehow handles recoil better than the Bisley. Yours is just one opinion about the Bisley, yet you state with certainty that it somehow doesn't handle recoil better than the plow handle. Yours is one opinion, and frankly, the minority opinion. There is a reason why so many custom revolver builders put Bisley grip frames on the heavy kickers. Ask yourself why. Is it a misconception?? I think not.

The thing with the Bisley grip is that you have to GRIP it ;-)

The design of the Bisley grip causes the gun to push back more like a double action. It is true the design was originally put out by Colt at the request of European target shooters but now they have a second purpose. I have 475's with both SBH and Bisley grip frames and the recoil is different and after a few years of running 50 to 100 rounds out each session I destroyed my wrist, for full disclosure my wrist was also damaged from my work but I also have large hands and wrists as I'm 6'2"/250 but a full house 475 load with a standard grip frame can be dangerous if your not technically or physically able to deal with it that's why when I had mine built years ago before I started building my own I had to fight with the builder to get the SBH frame. It's not the same as a 44 or 45 and if I remember correctly Linebaugh won't build one on anything except the Bisley frame and definitely the max frames have Bisley grips unless you like front sight indentations in your forehead. The muzzle flip from the standard frame is twice what a Bisley frame is. I like the sbh grip frame and I still shoot my 475 but I'm larger than most and I literally have thousands of rounds of 475 and 500 Linebaugh rounds down range out of 5 shot single actions.
I personally don't want one of my customers hurt or to get a gun they can't or don't want to shoot so if I were to build a sbh grip framed big bore for a customer it would only be after alot of discussin and probably cussin.

Yup. I have found that Bisleys recoil more like a DA revolver than a plow handle which does have more flip.

I have both types of grip frames on .45 colts.One is a 4 5/8
Blackhawk another a 7 1/2 ,and a 5 1/2 Bisley. All have grips with a filler behind the trigger guard because they bash my knuckles, both frames. .Pachmayr and Hogue work well as do an old set of Herret grips. For the Bisley my own design as I can not get Hogues or pachmayr yet.The 7 1/2 gun I have had since early 70 ,Bisley since 04 so they are not new to me. After market grips,or custom are the only way for me to shoot with any degree of comfort with either frame. A .475 with factory grips, NO THANKS! Shooting is not supposed to be an endurancy match,Ive beat my knuckles up enough already. Love my Rugers, but I make them fit my hands and my grip .

It depends on the shooter also, I've never had a problem with getting my fingers beat up even with them being on the large side and this gun pictured is a beast but old Ed at 72yrs old thinks it's a blast and it doesn't phase him at all. He plans to take it to Africa to take another handgun bull elephant. I hope I'm half that tuff at 72.

All of us have different hands, and grips like every thing else, are not one size fits all. We all have to learn to adapt and use what works for us. Artheritus and old injuries don't help either.
Ed must be a tough old bird and I wish I could go with him .

LOL he is tuff at that and a straight shooter in more ways than one and that's two of use that would like to go, maybe he can hide us in his luggage.

You would have trouble at the metal detectors from the extra metal we carried ,both internal and external.We would both beep.
Ed have you ever tried elephant meat? How close will you try to get for the shot,and how do you practice for it. It would be at a steep upward angle ,and through a lot of spongy bone and meat right?

At that range it's plant your feet trust in your equipment trust in your training think front sight,breathe,squeeze,follow thru,repeat. Once you start that fight you stand there and finish it. Then thank god or what ever spirits you pray to for the opportunity and the animal.
At that close range, with a gun in your hand animals always seem
to know you are there. We seem to put off different vibrations when we hunt. Wish you luck good health,and a steady hand.
