I settled on a hunting load for my SBH using a 270 gr Speer GDSP. I had only shot it out to 100 yards so far and it will break milk jugs on every shot if I do my part. Its not "MOA" but its "minute of deer" I just joined a new range and the longest backer is 168 yards so I decided to see how this load impacts at that distance. There were several things working against me shooting this group. 1. This is not the most accurate load in this gun. It prefers a 255 grain Cast Performance bullet but I prefer jacketed bullets for hunting. 2. I could not see the "+" mark I drew on the target at 168 yards through the 2X scope. I attempted to hold the horizontal crosshair on the top edge of the paper and the vertical crosshair centered on the paper. With no mark to hold on I know I was a little inconsistant. 3. There were gusty crosswinds blowing left to right that helped spread the group. Even with all that going on I'm pretty happy with how it did on this 5 shot group. I have never fired a revolver on paper past 100 yards before this. I don't plan on shooting game at that distance but its good to know where it impacts at that range.

I see nothing to be ashamed of with that group. I've dealt with rifle shooters that can't do that good.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

What is your zero it looked like it only droped about 10"
Are you about 2" high at 100??

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Pab,
Nice shooting - 168 yds with a 2X scope is a LONG ways.
Where is your zero? 100?
Looks like Bug and I were on the same path...

not bad at all for a 44 at that range, those are all vital shots on a mulie. Looking at that the lungs and or heart are going to be in trouble

Nice shooting, at 168, I couldn't see the paper! After that, shooting at 100yds probably felt a little easier. If you take a couple of inches off the spread due to wind (maybe that's too much, I don't know) and consider the spread from the highest to lowest shot looks to be about 4", I'd say that's a real good group! just my opinion...

Good shooting,2x runs out fast past 75 yds for me. When I shoot longer ranges I make 2 to 6 in squares out of black felt roofing paper. They are easier to see at 2x and give good aiming points if you shoot at the corners. Staple to a white sheet of paper and bracket the corner with the crosshairs. You can usually pick up scrap felt at any building site.

Looking at targets out at 168 yards with a 2x scope can get pretty tough.I'd say you did a great job with it.

great shooting. the other guys said it best already. like you said its not a bad idea to see where its hitting at longer ranges even if you don't plan on using it on game that far.
Plus its always fun just to see what your rig is capable of

P.S. , have you used that bullet on any game? what muzzle velocity? just curious as to what you thought of its performance.

I have not used this bullet on game yet. The last few years it seems like opportunities happened when I was carrying a .454 Casull. I'm building a holster for the SBH now and plan to carry it until I take something with it. I used a shoulder holster for this gun before and don't care for that set-up so it would usually be left at home. I didn't own a chrony when I worked up this load and have not run any rounds through it since getting one. It should be around 1300 fps.

Sweet. That is DDA to me.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Far shootin' with a scoped handgun really tests your ability to hold the crosshairs still.
I honestly think that is what made me a better handgun shot.
I expect you'll feel good in the woods this fall!
