How effective on what? The 30 carbine is about like a 32 mag or 32/20, + or -. I wouldn't use one for deer, but the 32 mag makes a nice small game or predator killer out to about a hundred.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

More like a 38 special +P.

Look at it this way, the case is the same length as the 357, but it has 16% less volume due to the smaller hole.

mud,

It is a great gun and caliber, within its range of useability. It fires a 90 to 110 grain bullet in the 1,300 to 1,500 fps range. This relegates to an excellent plinking and small game gun, like the 32 H&R mag, 327 Federal mag, 32-20 WCF. Even better with cast bullets. It really shouldn't be used for medium or large game! Like the 357 mag, it has pretty significant hypersonic muzzle blast ( hell on the ears! ). I have several and really like blasting gophers and the like with them. I know an ole' boy who would shoot at and occasionally get a deer with his; however, the kill to wound ratio was probably not justifiable!

Doc

It's only .30 caliber.....

I remember shooting an AMT pistol in .30 carbine, and I recall that it was REALLY loud.

Excellent "jackrabbit" round but as already been stated --- very loud.

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

My son had a 30 carbine, in a carbine, and the rounds were hard to find and expensive when we did find them. This was in rural, middle TN, and we finally decided it was more trouble and expense then the performance of the round was worth. We sold it. But, we were not reloading, and that would make a differance

If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.

Could have Reeder convert it into that short 30-30 round that he rechambers the 30 carbine to-- someone here has one of those

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

The 30-30 is a wee bit long to try and fit into that Blackhawk cylinder. Gonna have to borrow Rod's frame stretcher ;-)
