Well, as a lot of big game applications are either long done, or recently wrapped up and fall is rapidly approaching, Any of you guys and gals have any hunting trips or exciting plans for this hunting season?

I was unsuccessful in the Minnesota Bear permit drawing, and had the same outcome with my South Dakota West River Deer app. So given all of this (and my current budget) it looks like i will be restricted to hunting MN whitetails. (which i planned on doing anyways.)

I hope everyone else had better luck drawing tags. I am curious to see your plans for this season. Good luck, I am looking forward to seeing your success!

I came back from a moose hunt in Maine a couple of weeks ago.....

Nothing solidified yet for the rest of the year.

Std Spot here in south LA will do the west Texas trip again as well as a trip to west Alabama late in the year.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Drew a Muledeer tag for the westside of the Clarkfork river over here in western Montana. We've taken some pretty nice bucks in this area in the past.

I tore my right bicep tendon and had to have surgury to reattached the tendon. So now i'm switching to my left hand and i'm not able to even use my right hand to help stabilize the gun.

Shot the 454 one handed off the bipods two days ago not easy but doable. If you guys have any ideas that might help would appreciate it.

Going to shoot that Muledeer with a handgun no matter what.

I was so busy with my business I missed the application deadline which is just as well this year as it would be hard to get away. I'll be concentrating on getting my daughter her first animal. I'll have my deer, bear, cougar, and elk tags but I'll be close to home. In OR you have to be 12 to get a license but they started a new program that allows children over 9 to hunt with someone over 21 and fill that persons tag. I have a disabilities permit so I can shoot either sex which means my daughter can do the same. I'll take her after deer first which I have little confidence in being successfull at as the deer herds are in very poor shape in my area. I've received permission to hunt private land for Elk and I'll get more serious about trying to find an elk for my daughter to knock down, the only condition is I can shoot cows only. The good thing about elk hunting here though is they outnumber deer 5 to 1. I gave my daughter a Ruger #1 in 7X57 for her birthday, it's one of the Boddington series and she has been on fire with it. I don't have the time to specifically pursue bear and cats so that will have to be an incidental kill if it happens. I'm more concerned with giving my daughter a positive beginning into hunting than shooting anything myself.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

Either a Contender in .257 JDJ or an XP-100 in .308 Win. I haven't decided. I'll probably take both along. I MIGHT even spend the first day carrying a .44 Mag. revolver.

Utah for mule deer, Kazakhstan for mid-Asian ibex and maral stag, then Wyoming for antelope. Best of luck to everyone this fall. Hope you all get a monster and have fun doing so!

Deer, elk, and bear at my father in law's property in south central Colorado. It butts up against public land, so the fourth day of the season is almost always a sure thing to see lots of critters. Always had good luck there once everyone chases them around on public land a few days, and the critters figure out where the "safe" zones are. I am very fortunate to be allowed to hunt one of these "safe" zones. I'll be using either my G2 in .44mag, or if it sells or trades, I'll be using a S&W .460 -- my favorite calliber ever... so far.

Doing the Wyoming antelope thing, and I can't wait. Gonna try to do a couple days with the python, hoping to get close. I have 3 days to hunt, so time is very limited, hoping for the best. Then its back to Iowa to chase whitetails and coyotes.

Just got back from Montana on a "trout-hunting" trip!

Hunting locally for deer and HOGS, plus doves, ducks and other pursuits. Texas in November for deer, hogs, 'yotes, quail, etc, etc...getting ready to empty the "Brownie Points" jar with the Mrs. It's hunting season!

I'm making a return trip to Alaska. Here is a hint as to what I'll be hunting:

Hope to catch a few more of these as well:

I'll have to sleep with one eye open:

Then its back to chasing deer, black bear, and hogs around these North GA hills. Best of luck to everyone this season!

Of course you can ask! I plan to use my 8 3/8" 500 S&W as a primary weapon stoked with 3-375 grain Barnes XPB's and 2-400 gr Cast Performance bullets. Doc Rogers (who posted above) was kind enough to speak to me by phone earlier this year about his brown bear hunt. IIRC he took his brownie at 130 yards or so with his 10" Taurus Raging Bull and was very pleased with the 375 grain Barnes XPB's performance.

I also plan to carry my 376 Steyr XP-100 in my backpack for longer shots on bear, or if the opportunity at a wolf arises at longer ranges. I'm shooting the 270 grain Hornady in this gun due to the experiences of Mark Hampton, 500WE, and others in 375 caliber guns. I've been practicing at ranges up to 125 yards with the 500 S&W and up to 225 with the 376 Steyr. These are the max ranges for each gun/load without having to worry about trajectory.

The guns are capable if the shooter can hold it together at the moment of truth!

Hey Rod, I know it is not pertinent, but is that a 1A or RSI, I have been Jonesin' on a 7x57 for some strange reason, does anybody have that in a specialty pistol? how about the 6.5x 57? seems like an encore in either would be a good combination.

I've got an alligator hunt in about a week then in October I am going to southeast Georgia for a hog and bear hunt I am really excited about the it's back to public land in the mountains of northeast GA for deer, bear or hogs. I will make at least one trip to Alabama for deer with some good friends that always makes memories. For you guys headed to Wyoming for pronghorn I'm jealous! I went last year and had the time of my life. Good luck everybody.

it is a 1-A-Leopard which was one in run of 250 they made in the Boddington African series.

oh so sweet, they have the matte finish on the hardware and circasian walnut?...........there's just something about single shots and the best part is it's your daughter that you're sharing it with.... so far mine (daughters) are single, they have become my favorite hunting partners, but they have started cajoling my ordnance, and its too expensive to get two of everything!

Yep is has the circasian walnut with matte finish and it has the barrel band front sight like the big bores. I had a stainless/gray laminate in 458 Lott but sold it after my neck and shoulder surgeries. I couldn't stand not shooting it but it tore me up when I did. I like the idea of starting her out with the single shot so it makes her think more about that first shot. She loves handguns too so it's just a matter of time before she'll be using those, she already has her eye on that
7-30 G2 I just built.

It might be to close to leaving to try something else but you might eventually look at the 260gr Accubond and maybe even the Partition. I know the Hornady was the old standby for the JDJ but I've had alot of problems with them in rifles but they do hold together better at pistol velocities. I was getting better velocities and accuracy in my JDJ's when I switched to the accubond and they hold together very well but still expand. I shot my bull elk at 253yds last year with the 180gr in my 300 Win with a muzzle velocity of 2600fps and it worked perfectly. Just a thought, the partitions normally like a little more velocity but will still open and drive deeper, accuracy seems to be a little less than what I can achieve with the Accubonds but still good. The only reason I say anything is because years ago before I started reloading I was shooting factory 375H&H and 300WBY mag ammo, the 375 was Hornady Light Magnum ammo with the 270gr spire point and the 300 was Federal with the 180gr spire point. With both of these loads I found several jackets that had seperated when the bullet hit the target board which was 1/2 plywood and the jackets were laying in front of the target.

I know alot of guys have taken alot of animals with these bullets but this was my personal experience with them for what it's worth.

Thanks for the suggestion wapitirod, but like you said I hate to mess around with any more load development this late in the game. At this point, I'd rather spend my time shooting from field positions rather than on the bench. The 270 grain Hornady is running 2300 fps and I'm completely satisfied with the accuracy at 100 yards:

I'm certainly no expert on the killing of brown bears. That is why I sought the advice of others and your opinions are certainly welcomed. IIRC, Mark H. took his ~10' brown bear at 75-85 yards with the 270 grain Hornady in the 375-06 JDJ and it worked well. He was running the 270 grain Hornady 100-150 fps faster in the 375-06 JDJ than I am in the 376 Steyr so I think I'll be fine.

In all honesty, the main reason for even taking the 376 Steyr is for longer-range wolf shooting opportunities. I REALLY want to kill a brown bear with my 500 S&W revolver. But...I'd hate to miss out on the brown bear of a lifetime because he was out of my comfort zone with the revolver.

I do plan to try some 260 grain Accubonds at some point in the future in both my 375 JDJ and the 376 Steyr. Both of my handgunned elk were killed with the 308 Win and 150 grain Accubonds and they worked extremely well.

Rod, I agree with your observations; I shot a 4X4 bull elk with my .375 JDJ using a 270 Hornady and recovered just the jacket; perfectly mushroomed but no lead core. But it is hard to argue with the .270 Horn. performance record in the JDJ; I killed three other bulls with it also.

This will be the first year for my "Little Gun Invitational Antelope Hunt," in October. I have five guests, including .500 WE.

Then mule deer and elk on a new piece of private land here in Colorado. The camera will get the priority on whether or not the trigger gets pulled, as I am still filming for my next video.
