Up until this internet stuff I was content with my handguns, after all what in the lower 48 needs anything that a 44mag or 45 colt can't deliver? Then I meet a few folks and they started a spark that made me like tim the tool man taylor"more power".(thanks hitman, whit, and jwp to name a few) Then whit let me borrow his custom .475 and I killed something with it.It will never go home again,as it has a new home. Thanks whit you gotta another one I want to borrow!

Cool! Show us which one you requisitioned from whit.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Haha! You guys are funny! How come no one is asking for my .50 Alaskan?? LOL! Because I like my wrists/hands/forehead just the way they are! I passed up on a 50AK in an Encore earlier this year...that gun might induce a flinch I just can't shake!

So what is the .50 Alaskan like compared to the .460? I've owned the .460, and shot it a lot. So a comparison to that might help me understand... Or is it more like the S&W 500? Haven't been able to shoot one of those yet either.

I've shot that .50 Alaskan of Whitworth's. It's what the .500 S&W wants to be when it grows up. Recoil will get your attention.

I have had a dose of 50 AK in both encore & BFR. You can have them. They are fun, but not for long. LOL

Who is building your Maximum? I have the 3rd one that John Linebaugh built and would say it is my favorite handgun. If anyone here wanting a .50 Alaskan mine is for sale.

Who is that getting cracked in the head with the 50??? I remember when I got careless with my 454 shooting a 360gr CorBon in the kneeling position and it came back smacked me in the head. Actually stunned me for a second....

As far as I'm concerned, if you don't get cracked in the head at least once, you're A) shooting something really light that is well suited for women and children, B) you're not exploring the upper limits of your chosen caliber.....LOL!!

Spoken like a man who didn’t quite understand what was in his hand at the time.
There are a few slightly over the top homemade 45 Colt loads for the 5 shot cylinders that will “roll” past your ear when fired from a light weight revolver, if you don’t grip it correctly. No doubt some have come in contact with that “roll” unexpectedly.
Never had the opportunity of having a 50 Alaskan in my paw but I’m sure I wouldn’t enjoy it with full house loads. Single action 50’s start chewing on my trigger finger once I pass the 1,300fps mark.
A long barreled 500 Linebaugh Maximum is a joy to shoot, as long as you stay under 1,300 fps with the 440 to 535 grain bullets. 950 to 1,100fps is about as pleasant as a heavy 45 colt with minimum Ruger only loads. I ventured into the mid 1,500fps arena with a 440 grain slug in the Maximum and I couldn’t believe how bad my wrist hurt – thought I just didn’t grip it sufficiently and upon firing the 2nd round found out I still wasn’t gripping it correctly and after the 3rd shot I knew I couldn’t grip it sufficiently to stop the snap and the pain to my wrist. After 3 rounds at that velocity I called it quits and haven’t gone much over 1,300fps with the Maximum since.
It’s an unlucky caliber, as each time I’ve taken it afield to kill something worthy of this caliber, I’ve been skunked. It’s a real killer on squirrels and prairie dogs. Let me tell ya, a 440 grain slug plowing into a dry prairie dog mount at 1,200fps will send up a cloud of dust you could mistake for 2 ounces of C4 going off.

Not quite. I have a couple of revolvers, the .50 Alaskan in particular (the one being shot in the photo) that will make bodily contact if you don't give it your absolute and undivided attention and/or you let up your muscle tension even a little bit. It's a real horse. It has a Bisley grip so it really shouldn't roll on you. The load you see being shot in the photo is a 525 grain WLN that is clocking just under 1,600 fps. The revolver is built on a D-Max frame which is lighter than the later BFRs and it weighs in right under 4-lbs. It's just a bit too much and really nothing more than a novelty -- oh it's fun on a limited basis, don't get me wrong.
What grip frame do you have on your Max? Would love to see photos! Please post some up. Thank you!

I was kidding with that 1st remark – I’m pretty sure you know that – just couldn’t help myself after I saw the picture that Jim posted back when. My Maximum was built on a 475 Seville by Dave Clements – it’s got the plow handle and over 1,300fps with a good grip it will still snap/twist in your hand. If one was to shoot a steady diet of 1,200 or better, a rubber grip would be the way to go. Mine shoots a 440 grain at 1,220fps the best for accuracy but anything over 900fps shoots damn well also, but 1,220 is the sweet spot for me and that’s what I use when trying to kill something with a lot of space around it. 95% of my shooting with it is around the 1,050fps mark. The one picture is of my "big" bores. 44mag, 45 colt, 454 casull, 475 linebaugh, 500 JRH, 500 Smith and the Maximum.
