It appears that it may take longer for my 45-70 barrel to return from TC for repairs than expected. So with a month of serious target practice to engage in I will go to plan B. The moose pistol will have to be the .375 JDJ.

When I had the barrel rechambered by OTT TC was selling factory ammunition in that caliber. So I bought a few boxes and I have basically one full box left. The plan is to start reloading.

What I would appreciate is some advice as to what are your favorite loads, if you happen to be a 375 JDJ fan. While doing some preliminary scouting in this hunting area it appears most shots will be under 100 yards. You don't have the big clear cuts like northern NH. Most areas are smaller select cut overs where they are two or three acres in size at the most.

Shortly I will have a set of Redding dies. I have fired cases, primers and powder of various types. I may buy a new pound of powder that works best in that caliber as well as some jacketed bullets. So any posts are appreciated.

I've had three JDJ barrels and all three shot moa with the Nosler 260gr Accubond over 48.0gr of H4895. I prefer the Nosler because of bullet failures I've seen with the 270sp. The 270 has taken alot of animals in the 375JDJ ther is no doubt about that but after some of the things I've seen with several calibers and weights of sp's I won't run them in anything.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

I've used the speers as well with good success. If you're going to use the Accubond you can't use 4350 or 2520 because the bullet is longer and you can't get enough powder in the case. I'm using 52 gr. of 4350 with the Speer

270g Hornady sp over 52g Accurate 2520 works great for me too!

One more vote for the 270 Horn Spire over 52 gr. AA 2520.

I've shot the Hornady 270SP off/on for 14 years using 52.0gr AA2520; max load SSK barrel per their loading charts.

I consulted JD a few weeks ago regarding the 260 Nosler Accubond using AA2520 and he advised to work up to 2100fps and stop; for me that was 50.7 gr. I'd recommend you confirm that your self since SSK doesn't publish load data for the Accubond.

I also loaded 48.0 gr H4895 which is max for SSK barrels and I'm only getting on avg 1870 fps. The felt recoil is a lot less compared to the AA2520 load I am shooting which makes me wonder what the pressure of each load is.

The only reason I'm going with the AA2520 and Accubond bullet is I'm needing more speed at 200yds to increase the odds of bullet expansion; I'm going after a Mtn Goat in AK in a few days.

This is more of a question than statement... I'm a ballistics novice so don't beat me up to bad - Regarding bullet length of the Hornady 270 and Accubond 260 their identical when measuring that distance that is .375 dia (From cannelure to Hornady Base or to Accubond Boat Tail where it begins to taper) so therefore wouldn't the pressure be the same in a given load since the bullet bearing surface in the bore is the same, and if you seated the boat tail base just a tad deeper than the base of the neck as compared to the base of the 270 bullet seated to the base of the neck as recommended by JD the given air space would be relatively the same; my COL is 3.155" and I hear powder rattle when I shake it.

Probably no; even the copper jacket thickness and hardness and lead hardness will have an affect.

I know little about internal ballistics but I know enough that there can be no assumptions no matter what.

I may have asked this before--but what about a bullet made for the 375 Winchester??
Would that not expand well at low velocities??

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

The Hornady 220 FN bullet was designed for the .375 Winchester rifle, and does expand well at .375 JDJ velocities in animals like deer, blackbuck, etc. However, the topic under discussion is moose hunting, and I would never use that bullet for moose.
