I had base and ring screws come loose so I fixed it all. I had some trouble finding paper but got it on at 50 yards. I put shotgun shells on their sides at 50 and hit 5 in a row shooting at the bases. I found 3 and one had the brass peeled off and a cut that almost cut the shell in half when I nicked the rail.
I exploded a bunch of black walnuts at 50.
While sighting I had 5 shots in one hole.
I am in love with this gun.

430Man,

Nice shooting! But those are perfectly good AA hulls you're ruining! (Those were my favorite to reload in 12 and 20 ga - best hull life and crimp consistency)

It looks like you've got her dialed in - What load are you shooting out of the JRH?

Are shotgun hulls in season?

I use a 440 gr boolit I made a mold for, 29.5 gr of 296 and a Fed 155 primer.
Yep AA shells, I have piles of them but no birds to hunt here. I really miss quail, pheasant and grouse.

Nice shooting.

That particular load probably zips along at 1,300 to 1,350fps.

I would think you've probably been successful at keeping the rabbits away from your wife's flower garden with that load.

It goes exactly 1,350 from my shorter barreled BFR (6.5-inches).

You might want to try 375 gr. Xs. My .500 S&W Raging Bull shoots them in unbelievable groups. Took a brown bear at 129 yards with them. 350 gr. Speer FPs are a good mild recoil round than is wicked on deer.

Did you have Leupold add that target Turret to that 4X -M8

If so how much was that??

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

you can buy target turrets that screw on in place of your caps for most scopes although I'm not sure if that is what he has.

The bullet he is using is of his own manufacture (he made the cherry and the mold), and it has exhibited scary accuracy. With my BFR in .500 JRH, with that same load, he shot this three-shot group at 50-yards.

We have found great accuracy with pretty much everything we stuffed into these revolvers!

that's "scary good" Whitworth. How's the recoil and what length barrel?

It has a 6.5-inch barrel. The recoil isn't so bad -- worse than my old .475 (sold it recently), but less than my .500 Linebaugh (but that revolver is lighter).

No, that scope must be close to 50 years old and came with the turret. I wish I had one for windage because I have spin drift. Sighted dead on at 50 and boolits hit a little right at 100 and a little more at 200.
I remember driving from Cleveland to Akron to buy it at a distributor with a retail store in back and a dealer store up front. Been a LOOOONG time.
This gun will get an Ultra Dot soon.

I shoot only cast and made my own molds. I look at the price of bullets and cringe!
Then I started to look at loaded ammo of all calibers and did a few back flips. Did you know .416 Weatherby ammo is $154 and change from Midsouth for 20 shots?????? Some Hornady ammo is $114.
I shoot all day for just powder and primers. I even make my own Felix lube CHEAP.

I actually think the .500 JRH is easier to shoot then the .475 because I feel less wrist twist. Recoil is indeed heavy but I can shoot it all day.
That group Whit showed was shot with an Ultra Dot, 4 minute dot.
I set up a can at 100 yards and Whit shot at it but it did not fall. I took the next shot and it just fell straight down. This is what we found.

Both of us shot into the same hole.

Dang Jim - you really ought to work on those cast bullets of yours. It appears that your bullet sheared completely in half!

I can't swear to it but it seems we get smaller groups with the Ultra Dot then with a scope. They might be more stable shot to shot with less internals to move. Just use the right targets.
I got mine with a 7-1/2" barrel and there is little difference between them but I like the longer barrel for off hand. It helps damp the shakes.

My BFR 500JRH has a 6" barrel and when shooting a 440 grain boolit at 1,350fps it chews on my trigger finger 1st knuckle pretty good with iron sights. Putting on the scope base, rings and a Leupold 2.5X8 scope will tame it down some, so I don't get chewed on, but it's still plenty stout at that velocity.

Jim, does your 440 grain boolit have a shorter shank than most other makers? I find the 440 grain boolit to be about max length for the JRH case due to case taper but just a slightly shorter shank would really help out in several ways (I think). Most of my 440 grainers have a 0.507” shaft. Maybe I need to shoot plain base and leave off the gas check?

Darn, I just loaded the last 20 boolits I had so let me measure the mold. From the top of the crimp groove I measure .515". These are PB.
There is a slight bulge at boolit bottom in the brass but they fall in the chambers.
The .500 Linebaugh gives boolit length problems. The brass tapers faster.

I also get a buldge at the bottom of the boolit but with the gas check, it just might be a tiss larger and that's probably my problem. If I start the crimp in the middle of the crimp groove the cartridge won't fall into the charge hole - crimp at the very top, no problem. But then again, maybe I've got tigher chambers, either way it's a PITA seating the 440/465 grain.

A 500 grain Hornady XTP chambers like a charm and will keep rabbits out of the flower garden.

I have had cast boolits age expand for my .475 to .478". I size .476" and had trouble chambering after they expanded.
I had to size the boolits again.
See if it is the boolit going into the throats or the brass.

Have you looked at the caps I was talking about, the target turrets that just screw on. They should have one that fits and then you'd have your windage adjustment.

It's the brass. When I put pressure on the case, I have a nice shiny ring around the bulge at the bottom of the boolit. To me it’s tight chambers and the gas check that’s preventing me from using a normal crimp.

If you & Whit use that load for “plinking” my hat is off to ya – after about 40 rounds at that velocity I’ve had enough and back off a little. Great hunting load for rabbits but my trigger finger takes a whopping at those velocities.

I’ll go out again tomorrow morning and get beat up a little but I’ll take the 500L Max along with the JRH for a little relief.

I use nothing but hunting loads for 99% of my shooting. Rare to load anything light except the .44 for cans.
50 shots with the .500 JRH leaves me with the need to load and cast more. I never want to quit. I set a line of black walnuts at 50 yards and peeled everyone off but the box of ammo just goes empty too fast.
You have to hold it tight and NOT let it "roll." I really think it has less wrist twist then the .475 and is easier to shoot for a long time. I don't use a glove and have felt nothing with my hands.
