The rifle had a major malfunction this summer and will not be replaced i will do all of my hunting with handguns this year.Contender will be the go to for everything squirrel, rabbit, deer, bear, turkey and grouse. 30-30 for the big ones .22 and .410 for the rest.
Single six will be my scouting and trapline companion.

Sounds like a plan to me! But, it won't stop after this year....
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

I am using my '06 Encore exclusively this year too. Will see what it does Saturday on antelope.

I love my .410 Encore for the bunnies. How's the population up there this year????
7mm-08 Encore for the deer
I also carry a single six for the trapline. Looks like we have great taste in firearms.
Best of luck to you this season.

I haven't shot anything with a rifle since 1978. .22 MkIII for squirrels. FA .454 for turkeys (36+ so far), and a gazillion others for everything else. Did a Cape kudu and 6 other s with a 6.5/.284 XP and a hippo with a .375/.284 this year. Who needs a rifle? It all can be done with a handgun.

I still use both --Now I know this sound crazy but with the exception of the big OBJ scopes (that work great in the almost dark) I find a handgun eaiser to shoot than the rifle.
Just to much movement in the rifle
When I hunt with my son I have handgun he has rifle.-- I work pretty good as a back-up
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Seems to be a common thread here for trapline handguns. RUGER!!! (Hello fellow trappers!) I'll be the odd man here. Mine is still RUGER but it's not a revolver, it's a MK II. Mine is a 6" target model that my wife bought new for me a little over 20yrs ago last April (1st anniversary gift) so it has great sentimental value, but I kinda wish it was a shorter bull barrel. Will never get rid of the gun but may get a 4.5" Pac-Lite or some such barrell for it some day. In the meantime, she's a GREAT firearm as is. Almost hate shooting it because it reminds me how bad my NEOS trigger is.
For you south of the border Canadians (since I live in Alaska you are our brothers to the south),another hobby I have is prospecting, & I know Canadian prospectors that have permits to CARRY a handgun when in remote areas for protection & survival purposes (NOT hunting) that I believe also applies to trappers. Probably doesn't help the avaerage Canadian much. Probably have to have a "free miner's" permit or a registered trapline to get the bush carry permit I suppose. I am VERY thankful for our firearms freedoms here & DON'T take them for granted.

You guys don't know how lucky you are to ba able to use handguns for hunting. Here in Canada you can't hunt with a handgun. Mike Mike my wife is from Calgary. We were married there 23 years ago. I have been invited by her family to hunt there for the past 23 years. I have boycotted hunting in Canada because of this very reason. I have actually written a letter to your equivalent of our wildlife resources folks complaining of the no handgun hunting. I have never heard back. Come south and enjoy the freedom!!!!
