I picked up a BFR last Friday in 45/70. I can't believe Hogue doesn't make a "Tamer" grip for it like I have on my super redhawk. I have a molded rubber grip I purchased from them for my super blackhawk a year ago which fits, but isn't soft like the tamer and I can't see it absorbing much recoil. So my question is, what's the next best thing?
thanks,

I had a houge monogrip from my super blackhawk on mine. It fit wonderfully.

Thanks Tobias. Sorry, I wasn't very clear on that. The molded rubber grip I bought for my SBH is actually from Hogue and it did fit just fine it just isn't as good as the tamer. I talked to hogue today. they aren't working on a tamer for the blackhawk. Also, the grip I have might be ok, I'm just trying to get some opinions on other grips out there.
thanks

Have you shot it yet? I have found that even loaded hot, the .45/70 BFR is quite comfortable to shoot. Try it, you'll like it!

Whitworth, try shooting it at 450 Marlin pressures and see how comfortable it is. If the frame has a prefix of JT on the serial # it can handle 450 pressures and actually can be fitted with a 450 cylinder. I was running 440gr CP's at 1650+. What it amounts to is your using modern lever action 45-70 data. I was shooting the same loads in my BFR as I did in my 1895.

The one thing I can tell you about the grips is don't buy the wood ones that Magnum sells, they are way oversized even for big hands like mine and make it hard to control with heavy loads.

I have Rod, but maybe my sense of recoil is a bit skewed.

I think that about nails it down ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Could be, but when you sit down at the bench with my .50 Alaskan, and shoot a dozen or so rounds, they all feel light in the recoil department.
