Tomorrow is opening day for deer and I'll be taking my daughter out. Today though I was making sure the old hunting rig was ready to go so I went up in hills by the house to make sure the 4x4 was working and the recent repairs I made were good. I came around a corner and about 100yds in front of me was unmistakeable wobble of a porcupine. Here in the northwest it's standard practice to eliminate these guys since they are very hard on the trees. Anyways I got to within 40-50yds before he started to panic. I jumped out with the Glock 22 and took aim for a Texas heart shot. The bugger hunched up at the shot and I knew I had hit him but he was still on his feet, he turned broadside and I center punched him putting him down. I got up to him and dispatched him for good and was in awe of his size. Most porcupines around here are in the 10-15lb range and this guy is easily over 30. When I got him home I was looking for the impact of the first bullet because there was no blood from the first hit. It was then I found out that I had turned him into her, the berries were there but the twig was gone. I actually felt kind of bad for the guy. I was shooting factory Federal 130gr HydraShocks.

I have Glocked a few of them around here. Very tuff animals. I don't remember ever having an exit hole on any of them even with rifles.

No, didn't try that. I have him on ice right now until I can get around to plucking his needles. I figure my wife and daughter can use them for their craft stuff.

skin him! I skinned one once for a lab study skin for a mammology course in school. The tail skins hard because of the integumentation, skin him cased and then remove as much of the fat as you can, then borax the hide to keep it from spoilin'. they are prety interesting critters.
