The title says it all.

I want to put together a 1911 for hunting deer and hog sized game, as well as protection in the bush when I don't have a 44mag along.

Which would be better??

50 yrd range.

Black bear/cat defence.

Accuracy.

Thanks

Bigger is better, if you are thinking 45 Super why not go all out and get the 460 Rowland. Of the two you mentioned, the Super gets my vote.

Rod, too.

The Rowland is too much $$ for now, but that would have been my first choice.

Minnesota,

I have the Rowland and love it, but I do understand money crunch.

As to the two choices, I guess it would depend upon whether or not you hand load v. what is available for factory.

You may have a similar problem that I have, a ranch where you can encounter black bears that the neighbors have made "stupid" or mountain lions that do have run of the place. Problem is that I feel optimal bullet choices for each critter are somewhat different. In my Rowland I like 250 grain fp's "lumbering" along at 1100 fps which is real easy for the Rowland for bear fodder, but kinda lean towards Hp's for lion fears. The good news is that my Rowland shoots most bullet weights to very similar POA/POI, so it is easy to switch around.

If you already have the 1911, then I might lean towards the Super, as down the road your load work ups and experience would help transition to a Rowland if you want to go that way. With that said, and as much as I do not really care for Glocks anymore, I still get a little weak kneed when I see 10mm Glocks, and what folks have been able to do with them. And it is really funny, as I am a 1911 nut, but the Delta Elite does not do this for me. I guess I think of the Glock in 10mm as a tool to take abuse.

For the money a Glock 10mm is hard to beat but you're right, it's a tool, there is nothing resembling art on a glock.

I had a glock 10mm. It felt like holding on to a 2x4. I would rather have a 1911 but thats me. They just feel a lot better in my hand than the glock does.

I like the 10mm, but consider it marginal for deer or larger.

But you CAN get it in a 1911 frame, the Colt Delta Elite, Springfield Omega, etc, etc.

In a hot handload with a 200 gr TC it can be a real mover.

Your money, maybe a 41 mag in a 4" would be a better choice.

If you don't already have the 1911 donor for the conversion, a Springfield XD can be converted to 460 for a good bit less $$ overall. Wild West Guns in Alaska used to run a special on NEW conversions, can't recall the price, but it was quite reasonable.

I will look into that, as I do not yet have a donor. The Rowland is really what I want....but I like the 1911 platform.
I have never handled an XD.

Either will get it done with the right bullets. Don't sell the 10mm short as they can be quite effective, and frankly deer aren't that hard to kill.

Preach it brother!!!!! I just don't get what people are thinking sometime with what they need to kill a deer. Cows and hogs are killed with a 22short every day in meat packing plants, I know it's put to there head but still. And I'm not saying to use a 22short on deer. But I knew an old man when I was a kid that all he took was a 22mag and shot the deer behind the ear. He said it worked every time. But this man grew up killing to eat. You don't kill you don't eat.
That said I would go with the 45 super, bigger is better. Shot placement is every thing so what ever you get, get good with it don't wound and lose a deer. Shoot as much as you can so you can hit the sweet spot.
Oh and yes I am going to try my 500 mag on a deer, so what does that make me????? And I never hunt with less than a 35rem in a handgun for deer. I was just trying to prove a point.
But that's just my $.02 worth...............

Uncle ted put that Cape Buff down with a 10mm Glock. I agree about the Glocks being plain and I never cared for them but ever since I got my 40 I've changed my opinion some. Mine is definitely a good shooter and I think I might have to get the 10mm one of these days.

I think the 460 Rowland is the way to go too but otherwise it would be a toss up, if your going 1911 I'd probably go the traditional route with a 45cal and as long as you buy a quality gun it can eventually be converted to 460, the kits are under 300.00 if I remember correctly.

I have both a Delta Elite and an EAA witness hunter (6"Barrel).I am very impressed with the EAA.It is very accurate, great single action trigger and it eats anything it is fed. The delta was my favorite before the EAA.(I have both)
I have not taken any game with the EAA yet but it will be my companion this year.

A friend described Glocks as having no soul. There is nothing stirring about them like a real metal and wood pistol.

Indeed, but there is some beauty in their functionality!

I am looking HARD at the EAA Witness Hunters in 10mm!

Might be the ticket.

Although I fondled a couple XDs today, and they are nice too. Plus you can get the Rowland conversion for them. Don't know if I can get used to the glock style trigger though for hunting.

And there is still something about the 1911 style that won't let go.

What to do.....

It would help if I could handle the witness hunter. May answer some more questions.

That is very true, the one I have I only aquired because of the deal I got on it. It's a Model 22 that belonged to a reserve cop but his wife commited suicide with it so he took a used Leupold 3-9 straight across for it. It was described earlier as a "tool" and that's what it is and I've found it to be a very good tool and it rides in the small of my back whenever I'm working or going any place and I forget it's even there whereas my 1911 is much heavier not to mention I have 16 rounds as opposed to 8.

The EAA Witness is a CZ clone, and although not many gun shops will have a Witness on hand, nearly any gunshop will have a CZ75 variant on a shelf.

Glad I read this post. I was debating on getting rid of my XD45 tactical but now I may go get in converted to the 460 rowland. Oh ya.

MN, there are after market triggers for the XD's. I own 3 of them and they are very fine shooting guns. I think I am going to convert the 45 tactical to a 460. The after market triggers are a big improvement over the factory.

Well in the ten minutes since I read this post, I just ordered the 460 rowland conversion for my XD tactical. I didn't realise it has darn near the power of the 44mag. Another round to reload.

Excellent, I figure on converting my old 1911 when I'm caught up on other projects. Let us know how you like it.

I just keep thinking about Don Johnson with his Bren 10 on Miami Vice-- he shot a lot of bad dudes with that CZ75 conversion-- back in the 80's that was the coolest auto out there.

And you don't think that will not kill a deer or a hog??

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

The reloading is the fun and tricky part. The extra case length over the 45acp case does two things. Keeps the rounds out of an acp gun, and gets "fun" when you start selecting bullets, if you deviate much from 185 to 230 hp's or fp's. But I dig mine. Good luck with yours,

Craig

I shoot the 255 grain hard cast out of my 1911 at 1090 FPS. They are accurate and hit hard

Jwp,

Which flavor of 1911 are doing that with? A Rowland or Super or stock? I know the only real difference with all of these is with the brass construction and how the gun is set up, but I am curious.

Thanks,

45 Super gets the 1090 FPS, 45 ACP +P about 960 FPS with the same bullet. Not a lot of difference actually

Jwp,

Thanks. I am not sure if my 250 Rowlands at 1100 are just "slow" or whether your 255's are running warm, but we are both getting the same amount of performance from different 1911 flavors. 130 fps is really quite a difference when you are just looking at raw numbers, the place where many of these this v. that threads tend to get heated. But I suspect as each of us are in the same weight and velocity class, we have similar perspectives on performance ;^)

Thanks,

Craig

cfish2,

Where did you order the Rowland kit for the XD? I have a Wilson kit for my 1911 and a limited run Dan Wesson 5" revolver in 460 Rowland.

I just received a Cabelas ad. They have the Glock Model 20 (10mm) with 2 barrels. The normal barrel and then an additional 6" barrel they are calling a hunting barrel.

It's on page 10 of the ad.

OK guys,
My semi auto project will have to wait. I was out looking at a EEA Witness Hunter in 10mm, when I noticed a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 45colt!! For the bargain price of $530, so I had to buy it.

I'll start a new thread with pics, and the details.
Thanks for all the advice. I do appreciate it.
