I have been away from handgun shoot for years. I got a Contender this year for deer hunting. I want to get back in to shootng matches. I run a long range rifle match at Roanoke VA, the Roanoke Egg Shoot. My club Roanoke rifle and revolver club http://www.roanokerifle.com/ did shoot Metallic Silhouette with all guns, but only shoots blackpowder rifle now. I have been shooting the Hunter pistol targets at 100 and 200 yds, with red dot and scoped Contender. I would like to start some kind of match for hand guns, using the Metallic Silhouette we have. I would like to shoot from the bench, allow scoped guns and shoot out a ways 200 to 300 yds or so, we have 500 yds. I have looked at adding a long range handgun class to my egg shoot match, All I would have to do is add a class. Let me have your input on both matches

Also, what would be the best round in a Contender for the shorter range match? 7-30, 6.8?

I would use my 357 Maxi, depending on what you mean by shorter. In these matches, are you required to knock a steel target over or just hit it?

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I am looking to doing a modified Metallic Silhouette. I have been shoot everything at 220 yds with a 223 and 35 Rem. Our rails are set at 200M,300M, 425yds and 500 yds. 100 and 200m may be the best for all targets, that would keep it in the low power scopes range and open sight guns.
The long range will be shot at the Egg Shoot. Targets will be set 300m, 425 yds, and 500 yds. at clay targets. Eggs are at 500 yds. I will add a long range handgun class. 2012 Egg Shoot will be April 28th.

I am interested in the long range handgun egg shoot. What are the rules? My long range XP-100 should be here next week.

Look up Ray Bartolo(sp) and see what they do. Their egg shoots are with pistolas.

Do you think there will be many handgunners out there for the egg shoot? My xp will have to shoot in the custom class because of the stock.
