This was a readhead branded mount that was made by durasight. Broke right at the unused slot. Anyone have any idea how to make these not flex ahead of the chamber area.

I have never had that probelm with the steel MGM base or the Leupold base

That thing must have had some major flex

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I too have used the MGM base and have had no problem. The SSK TSOB base is very strong as well.

Unsupported bases will flex and some flex a lot. Brittle metal will break, soft will bend.
Even the heavy bases on the BFR will flex enough to mark the barrel.

Seems like a strange place for a slot.

I would bring this to the attention of the maker.

The Weaver Al bases are about 3 times that thick

Curious how long the barrel is? I had a factory 7mm-08 with a 10" barrel that recoiled worse (and the recoil was quite abrupt comparatively) with 160gr. Accubonds than my 30-06, .500 S+W, or .470NE Encore barrels...

TYLER,

Mike Bellm has looked into this issue and has experimented by drilling and tapping the mount near the forward end and seating a screw to abutt ( contact ) the barrel. The premise is that this will stabilize the mount and reduce the flex of the mount upon recoil. I haven't tried it; however, it seems like a reasonable and inexpensive approach.

You would think someone would have designed a scope base contoured to fill up the gap between the base and barrel by now.

The scope base manufacturers probably wonder why T/C doesn't just extend the chamber area an inch further forward.

MGM's new base is contoured to the barrel taper--if you skim coated it with Dynamold it would be a perfect metal on meatl fit
