I have a 7.5" BFR on 500 S&W and I am thinking of putting an ultra dot on, but the rings that come with them look like they were designed for a rimfire pistol. I'm pretty sure a full house load out of that monster will snap them in a heartbeat- actually I think it would break a lot of rings that are out there. What are good rings to get for LOTS of recoil? This would be my first optic mounted on a handgun, so I'm sure I will have lots of questions.
Also, I have to order the weaver mount for the pistol from MR, as my gun was an old stock item that didnt come with one. Sugguestions?

I've used the aluminum units but I triple up on them and they seem to work fine.

Warne makes great steel rings. They make them in 30 mm and 1" Check them out. They are good, strong rings.

Yes. I've used them on some heavy kickers and they were fine, particularly when we used three of them (securing an Ultradot 30 to a BFR in .500 JRH).

WOW! I am very surprised they held up! They don't look very strong, but what do I know, right? Thanks!

I was looking through my safe tonight and I realized I still had a set of One Ragged Hole rear sights left from my SBH. I didn't care for them on the short barrel on it so they have been hiding in the safe ever since. I tried them both and I still didn't like them. I just cannot get on them very fast. Then I noticed that the factory rear sight on the BFR had a small gutter around the opening. I raided the wife's fingernail polish and this is what I came up with. Orange stripe down the front, and green around the back. We will see how it does out in the sun tomorrow. It will have to suffice until I can afford the Ultra Dot.

That should work! Here is a photo of the BFR with the aluminum rings -- this is when we just put it on and it only had two rings. We later added a ring.

Why did you add the third ring? Was it shifting zero, slipping in the rings or better safe than sorry?

It was a case of better safe than sorry. It didn't shift -- yet -- and I didn't want to take a chance.

I had the Ultra Dot turn from torque on my BFR .475. I used Warne steel rings. I have found some slipping problems with any ring and the factory aluminum rings are about like all others. I now like to put 3 rings on and I put the front one right against the scope turret. I just never put a ring directly over any glass. I broke glass on a Bushnell red dot. These things need to be tighter then anything on a rifle. I have a loopy base on my .44, rings are close together so I need a front extension ring. These have turn in lugs and after a while I sheared the lug right off. I called and they sent me a new set free but in the meantime I drilled and tapped the ring for a cap screw into the lug, then silver soldered it. It has never failed since. Even a .44 will break things. I have ruined many scopes, wiped out the soft Burris tubes, pulled glass out of cheap red dots like Millet and Bushnell. I steel bed the prism back in and they hold better then the Chinese glue. I seen a picture of a base breaking in half. Bases flex. G forces on a big revolver is nothing to laugh at. Recoil has NEVER harmed an Ultra Dot but mounting systems can fail. Base screws come loose and screws can shear. I don't like the heads up stuff because many have poor mounting systems. As I have gone to larger revolvers like the .475 and .500's, it has been a learning experience. Anything heavy on a big handgun needs to be avoided like the large variable scopes. I have an OLD, OLD Loopy I have had since the handgun scope first came out and it has been on a hundred guns and is still going strong. I have a Tasco that can't be harmed but they are light, tough scopes, single power. I was given a laser once and it was fun but I wiped it out, batteries were driven into the laser board. Some stuff sold is so poor, you can take it out of the box, put it on a hunk of steel and smack it with a BIG hammer to save the work of mounting it. I see pictures of stuff mounted on big revolvers on the sites that I know is going to fail, yet the stuff is recommended. I don't want to be a thorn but don't take things for granted.

Rod, too.
