I have broken the ice and bought my first hunting revolver. I bought the super redhawk 44 magnum. I plan to burn some powder through it soon. Is there away to pull the hammer back without it making that click sound. Where can you buy the ruger factory mounts. The gun I bought did not have the mounts with it. The new gun looks odd in the drawer with the contenders. I can't wait to try it out. It will be nice to shoot six times without reloading.

Those clicks are music, you just gotta pick your time to make it. You can muffle it somewhat with your off-hand when cocking, but it will never be as silent at a 'Tender. Just take it slow and easy, it is much louder to you than the game. I've never had a deer bolt from the click of a safety or cocking, they will usually stop and look around but then go about their business unless something else makes, or has made, them jumpy.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I agree! That sound signifies that something fun is about to happen!

I also feel like those clicks sound like A 10 POUND HAMMER SLAMMING A PIECE OF STEEL to me when a deer is in range, but I also don't think it is as loud to the deer.

You ever feel like the deer should be able to hear your heartbeat?? I think it's the same kind of thing.

I have found that pulling the trigger while cocking the gun, and then releasing the trigger when it is fully cocked makes the clicks sound quieter. This may not be the safest practice, so make sure the gun is pointed in a safe direction in case your thumb slips.

:edit: I forgot to mention, when I do this, I slip the thumb of my other hand in front of the hammer as soon as it starts coming back.

I have 2 SRH's. The older one is as smoth as glass with almost no noise. The newer on in loud and metallic. FWIW

Deer Dad, if the mounts did not come with the gun you should be able to go to any gun shop and order a set of them. How much they might be is a good guess. Good luck.

DD, Out of curiosity I took my SuperRedhawk 44 double action and a Freedom Arms 44 single action out of the safe and worked the hammers on both of them and can say that the single action FA`s is louder when it comes to the clicks. Some much so that I pull the hammer back to the 3ed click on my FA`s, lock the cylinder, and keep my finger out of the trigger until ready to shoot when hunting. This way I have just the sound of one "click" when hunting. However, the SuperRed is a little easier in the click department and unless the game is within a few feet of you there should be no problems with you being discovered when you work the single action of your Ruger 44. Good luck and good hunting..

I do the same thing on my single actions. It makes the clicks noticeably quieter however I have never had game spook at the sound of the hammer cocking.

If you do it slow, it almost sounds like squirrels crunching on acorns.

I try to cock my revolver when I hear movement off in the distance, but that said, they've snuck in close on me and I've never spooked 'em pulling the hammer back.

Thanks for the input. I will wait to see what happens when old radar ears is close and see how she reacts.
