I shot this Blacktail doe yesterday on the last day I'd be able to hunt. My daughter and I had a deal if it was a situation where they weren't spooked and we could get her set up she would shoot if they were skittish I'd shoot. I took her at 55yds with the 454 I built for myself. The following pics show me with my 11year old daughter standing with the deer and then skinning the deer. The last pic is of the exit wound from the handloaded 300gr XTP. We saw very few deer this year and a buck wasn't in the cards but you can't eat the horns anyways.

Thanks guys, the elk season starts a week from Saturday for me and that's when I'll get more serious.

The 300 XTP's always worked great for me in my 454-Good job, and good luck with elk.

The XTP's have been the most accurate bullet I've tried in every revolver I've shot and owned with the exception of my 510 cal stuff since they don't make them and I never tried them in my 460 S&W when I had it since the Partitions were grouping under MOA. I've also had the best luck in my big bore rifles with the Hornady's my 45LC clover leafs the 300gr XTP's at 50yds with open sights and my 45-70's will shoot right around MOA with the 350gr RNSP, my LOTT used to love the 500grainers but when it comes to 338 and smaller it's Nosler BT's and Accubonds. I think I just hijacked my own thread, oh well. I was very happy with this load on deer, I was afraid with it being the XTP mag which I've loaded for elk I might not get the expansion I wanted but as you can see it made a big hole on the way out. I took out the top of the heart and one lung lobe. It couldn't have been more perfect on the heart because it just disconnected the arteries but left the rest of the heart in tact which is my wifes favorite part.

Hey Rod that's great!

Tomorrow is my opening day and I will be carrying the .475 L you built loaded with 400 XTP's; primarily trying to get the hunt on film...

Congratulations Rod,
I teach hunter and trapper's ed. here in Idaho and I think it's really cool to see a young lady so heavily involved in the hunt and then taking care of the animal afterwards. Best wishes on your elk hunt. CCN

that's a helluva exit hole. especially in a deer with a bullet tough enough for elk.

Congrats, Rod! That was an excellent shot! Good to see that young lady knows how to clean a deer...

Thanks guys and actually it was pretty cute with my daughter. I shot the deer at last light so I waited about 45 minutes before going after it. We were dragging down the side of hill in the dark and she kept saying "are you ok dad" "don't hurt yourself dad", she is very protective of me because of all of my surgeries. I am very proud of her though, I didn't push her at all she just seemed really into things so I'd ask her if she wanted to help and she'd dive right in without hesitation.

Congrats from me too. I love to take my daughters along with me as well, but I can't seem to get them to do the dirty work. Can't wait to show them these pictures.

Good shooting Rod. I also use XTP bullets and have had really good results. So far this season I have gotten 4 deer, for myself, my children and grandchildren. One more should fill all the family freezers. We have very liberal bag limits in Georgia. Lonnie

You know I've been thinkng about that song the last few weeks while her and I have been hunting. It's a very true thing and it's comforting to know when I'm gone she'll still have the memories of these times and hopefully pass on the love for the outdoors to her children so they can create the same memories.
