I am planing a pig hunt for next year. I will be using a 35 Rem Contender. I'm shooting a Hornaday 180 gr SSP bullet now, for deer. It mild load, low end to middle, shoots great there. I would pump it for hogs. Is this bullet good for hogs or do I need to go to the 200 gr bullet.

I agree with wapitirod. There is a big difference between a 125 pound pig and a 400 pound monster. Go with the 200 gr. bullet & make a good shot & you'll be fine.

Because of how tough the plate on those buggers are I'd probably go with The 200gr bullet and if I were shooting Hornady I'd probably go with the round nose over the spire point but that's because of personal experience I've had with the spire points. I've had too many jacket failures with sp's but I've shot two elk, an aisian water buff and a 700lb boar with the Hornady round nose soft points in both small and large bore and never had a failure and I've had awesome penetration yet good expansion. Like I said that's just my opinion from my experience.

Contrary to popular belief hogs ain't bullet proof. It is all about bullet placement and many hunters shoot to far back on a hog, that is behind the shoulder. The kill zone is in the neck rather than behind the shoulder. Here is some good info from an experienced hog guide. Properly placed the 180 gr SSP should do fine. I hunt them with 69 gr match hollow points and my AR-15 with no problems. http://www.texasboars.com/anatomy.html

the 200gr is the better bullet for any bigger hogs. but i allways use heavy bullets for what ever cal im shooting. seems to work rather its cast or jacketed. think sledge hammer.
shoot it if its still coming shot it again!!!

Don't confuse shooting with hunting. Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

Thanks for the info. I like to shoot the heaviest bullet I can. I don't need it for deer, but will try some for hogs.

May want to look a a 225 Nolser Acubond--I shot some out of my 356 Win
If your shots are close should have no problem with it expanding
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.
