Hey guys, I'm new to this site and have enjoyed reading previous posts. I have been an avid bowhunter for many years and have recently been bitten by the handgun bug. After weighing my options I decided on the 10mm cartridge and the Glock platform. I am not a revolver guy so I needed a capable round in a semi. The Glock is big, blocky, ugly, boring, but very reliable and pretty dang accurate! That is exactly what I need...a rugged, dependable gun. Plus, how sweet to have a mag that holds 15 rounds of 10mm...to much fun! Researching ammo I quickly realized most of the factory rounds were weak for this round. Hornady, Corbon, Winchester Silver Tips, are a few of the decent loads but still not up to snuff compared to Double Tap and Buffalo Bore. I decided to use Buffalo Bore 180gr JHP at 1350fps. The 10mm is a versatile load with many bullet options, I chose this one for the ability to penetrate but still expand and cause greater internal damage to the deer. If I am going hog hunting or bear defense then I might go with a 200gr hard cast flatnose bullet. The Glock 20 does an exceptional job of managing recoil. Considering the mag holds 15 rounds of 180gr bullets, the 20 has considerable weight to tame the snappy recoil. I found the powerful 10mm very easy to control and the gun is extremely shootable. I have always been a fan of Glock sights and triggers for that matter. The 20 is no different from any other full size Glock. It is offered in the SF model but I'm a fan of the big soap bar grip so Istuck with the original. At the range I shot 180gr Blazers And the 180gr JHP Buffalo Bore rounds. I shot from 10, 20, and 50 feet. Most of my shots were at the 50feet range bc I will be shooting.longer distances at deer. Here are a few rounds This was at 50 feet with my arms resting on the table on a chair..this will be the same position I shoot in my deer stand. This is 15 rounds at 50feet. I was more than pleased! And I dont know why this pic is sideways but you get the point. This was 10 rounds free hand 50feet.I had 2 fliers in the white but I was still pleased with that. Out of all the rounds, the Buffalo Bore certainly had more recoil but nothing uncontrollable at all. And of course the Glock 20 performed flawlessly. I'm not ready for 50-75 yard shots yet but I will be on the stand with it Sat.morning looking for that 25yard buck!

Looks like you can hit what yer aimin' at. I could never get used to that Luger grip angle. Another good place for heavy 10mm is Reed's Ammo out of OK. Good luck on the hunt and welcome aboard.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

When the .40 S&W came out years ago I did intensive hunting with it on groundhogs and deer and used about every bullet available on both. The hands down winner was the Sierra 165 gr. JHC. It was noticeably more effective on deer than 180s I tried. Gold Dots and XTPs did not do good at all. Cast 170 gr. did pretty good, too. Should be the same for the 10mm.

Glockhunter: I have recently joined the ranks of handgun hunting with the purchase of a Bisley Hunter in 44 mag and a Dan Wesson in 357 mag in which I am serious about acquiring the skills to take medium to large size game. I have also found that handgun hunting will require much practice and dedication to become skilled. With that being said, I have I have owned a Glock 20 for sometime and have thought of it's hunting implications. It is the side arm of choice (back up) when I'm rifle hunting for deer or hogs but I have yet to use it on game. As you stated, the accuracy is very good and the recoil is minimal for a 10 mm even with Buffalo Bore. I have flirted with the idea of getting an aftermarket 6 inch barrel for my Glock 20 with hope of some hunting. Although I am much more accurate with my hunting style revolvers, I would not hesitate to take a medium size game animal within my comfortable accuracy range (25 yards or less) of my Glock 20. I look forward to hearing about you Glock 20 hunting trip.

I've been a revolver guy for years but recently came into a deal on a model 22 and the gun is reliable and accurate. I've lightened the trigger on mine so it's a little more user friendly in a hunting situation. I don't know if I'd ever use mine as primary hunting weapon but your 10 should do the job nicely. Mine has killed a couple porcupines though

glockhunter,
Welcome to HHM. I've the 10mm in an S&W revolver, Ruger Blackhawk, and a G20 for small game, and a bunch of whitetails. Using Accurate #9, Rem 180 jhp. Never needed more than 1 for each animal. Ranges from 15 feet to 80 yards.

Sometimes it is entirely appropriate to kill a fly with a 12 pound sledgehammer!

It will really improve your accuracy if you put some fiber optic sights or maybe a Buriss Fast Fire rig on.

I believe Ted Nugent shot a warthog at 110 meters in Africa with his favorite handgun, a Glock 20, I do not think I could find a better platform to carry than a Glock..I'm a disabled vet and carry a Glock 22 with a ported .357 Sig barrel, even tried a scope mount and red dot, however that will be best saved for another day...Good luck with the 20 and hope to see a kill this year from you...

I saw part of the video footage of Uncle Ted and that was wild. I'm with you on the Glock for carry, I never cared for them because of the aesthetics but I was looking for a carry gun and I got a steal of a deal on it. I found the gun to be a very reliable and accurate tool. I installed a new disconnector and dropped a little over a pound off the pull weight and when I get around too it I'll put the entire trigger kit in. Mine is in 40 and I carry it in the small of my back with one of the gun mounted belt clips, it is alot nicer to carry than my 1911 and I have twice the rounds although less power. It has killed a couple porcupines and lots of paper and cans

Thanks guys. I've passed some nice bucks bc I want this guy. I had him at 40yds but just didn't have enough light to make an ethical shot. Hopefully, I get another chance on the morning. However, my freezer is empty so Ill probablytake a doe if I can.

Agreed I much prefer the factory sights to fiber optic. I love Glock sights!
