ok tell me what u think of the 480 for hunting? I see no reason to go any larger in a wheelgun. It is a nice balance between performance and recoil. I will have mine forever.

The .480 Ruger has no flies on it as far as I am concerned. Even loaded hot it doesn't kick badly and loaded with the right bullets can take anything you are wanting to hunt.

It makes a nice hole,it has 80% of the 454's power with half the recoil. I shoot 325 gr. cast and xtp's.

I am a late fly on this one...
I have 9.5 SRH's in both 44 Mag & 480 Ruger. I love them both and can tell you they are close. My 480 is shooting a Lee mold 325 from WW's and tumble lube at 1400 fps with 4 different powders confirmed by my Crony. It is knocking the crap out of 3/4 in plate steal at 25 yards. The only complaint I have is the cost of 475 bullets, but casting my own it is costing 65 cents per 21, (a pound) at a whole 6 cents per shot. The Lee mold new can be purchased for 20 bucks.
My .02's, for what little it is worth... BUY IT!!!

I'll let my album pics speak for me on what I think of the .480 for hunting.
Don't confuse shooting with hunting. Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

It makes a nice hole,it has 80% of the 454's power with half the recoil. I shoot 325 gr. cast and xtp's. It'll still make a bigger hole and it is when you load it with 400 + grain bullets, it's a hard combination to beat. Great round!

texasbilly, Mine has proven to be very accurate with 412 gr Hunters Supply FN cast bullets over a max charge of 296 at 1200 fps. This 3/4" group was shot at 60 yards: I've used this gun and load to take three pigs so far: I really like my 480 Ruger SRH!!!

I'm with s4s4u,in a wheel gun nothing more is needed.A 400gr bullet that's almost a half inch to start traveling 1100-1200fps I believe will handle most anything in NA.

ok tell me what u think of the 480 for hunting? All I know about the 480 is................I want one, BAD! The only time I've shot one was, a friend was having trouble sighting in his new Ruger SRH. So I sighted it in for him. I was impressed! I've got a Ruger SS 5.5 inch Bisley that I'm thinking about having redone to a 480

Some time ago, I was attacked by the .480 Ruger bug, and managed to acquire one of each manufacture (MRI, Ruger, Taurus) before the factories pulled the plug. At that time, CPBC touted its 410 gr. .476 bullet as ideal for the .480 Ruger. They do shoot well in my guns, but I get better groups in the SRH with a 425 grainer. The MRI-BFR prefers the Montana Bullet Works 400 grainer, while the Taurus does its best with jacketed bullets, due to the tight chambers. I use Accurate #9 with Federal Magnum pistol primers in all of my loads for this caliber.

Well, I had a 480 taurus once. Let my son use it to take a Buffalo and haven't seen it since. It was loaded with 325 XTP factory loads and only one round stayed inside that beast. I have killed several deer and hogs with that gun and have been very impressed with the power and accuracy of the round. As far as recoil, my son was 13 at the time he shot the buffalo. James from jersey and Franchise were with there when he shot it. Great round. I am going to pick up another Bisley Ruger and have it converted to 480. My son will have to wait till I'm worm food before he gets this one!

I appriciate it everyday! Not to change the subject but my daughter leaves next fall for college and I am happy and sad at the same time. She has been going to the woods with me since she was 11 months old. I am going to miss her smiling face everyday. Even the angry one as well!

Take heart! When they get to be in their late twenties, children realize that their parents are not as stupid as they once thought. When they get in their thirties, they realize that your advice was (or could have been) much more valuable than they realized. When they reach their forties, they realize that your insight is invaluable to them. Of course that is about the time their own children are realizing the shortcomings of THEIR parents.

Vance, when I turned 30 my Dad called me and said it was a turning point in my life. He had turned 60 the same year and said I was now officially over half his age... lol
