first make sure the Lott is going to be allowable I've heard of guys having issues with belted mags and the fact that these cartridges actually taper. Can't speak for the XP but the 458 Win is fun in the Encore and I'm still planning on pushing another barrel out to the Lott. I'm getting 2360 fps with the 350gr Speer which is specifically designed for the 458 and I'm generating 4300ftlbs of energy. I'm using mine for Roosevelt Elk and planning to eventually start selling barrels for dangerous game hunters but the Win and Lott are both pretty serious rounds for a deer especially at full house unless you really like recoil. The trajectory is still going to be like a rainbow past 200yds or so. You might take a look at something a little smaller such as the 375 Winchester or even the 357 max unless this isn't deer we are talking about or if they are t-rex sized deer. jmho

What ya tryin' to kill? Is there no restriction on length?
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

If your talking brownies then the 458 Lott is awesome although like I said I haven't tested it in a handgun length barrel yet. That is just a monster for deer. Don't get me wrong I don't believe in overkill but a big question is have you ever shot anything close to that in a handgun platform? The Win Mag I have is very controllable with a firm grip and the two inch muzzle brake but if I shoot it without my gloves on it will bruise the center of my palm by the third or fourth shot. If the belted mags and semi tapered cases are ok you might look at the 450 Marlin as mentioned above, that is What Ed Folmar shot his Elephant with using 500gr solids. It just depends on what your wanting. I figured there where two types of guys that would buy my barrels in the big calibers, one is the true dangerous game hunter and the other the guy that likes the biggest toys. I'm also figuring on eventually getting into the big rimmed african cals and possibly some of the big Sharps rounds. In fact if you want something unique with power you could look at the 45-90 or maybe in 45-120.

A 405 Win w/ 400 gr. Woodleigh bullets would be just fine for bears of any size. This round & bullet combo has taken many south pacific water buffalo.

Back in "Teddy's" time they didn't know you could hand load the 405 Win w/ a 400 gr. bullet to close to 2,000 fps which is really close to the .450/.400 three inch cartridge. Brittany Boddington used this load to take Water Buff in Australia in 2004 and Cape Buff in Africa in 2006 . This load should be fine for bear. Advances in powder and bullets have come a long ways since TR hunted Africa many moons ago. When you load the 405 Win. w/ 50.5 gr. of H4895 and an OAL to 3.230 w/ a 400 gr. bullet you have serious power that will handle anything that walks. If you load this round w/ 53.5 gr. of Ramshot TAC you will push the 400 gr. bullet a little over 2,000 fps. Yea a 400 gr. bullet at 2,000 fps, might just do the job.
