I am at a point of indecision.... For my Super Blackhawk Hunter, I am struggling with whether to mount a Leupold FX-II 2x or a Bushnell Elite 2x-6x. Had to send the Leupold 2x back that I purchased because of a canted reticle so I am at the decision point again. I am not afraid of Leupold at all. I am just wondering if the extra magnification and bigger objective would be an advantage. I know they are both excellent scopes. I think I have commitment issues....lol

I won't put a 2X Leupold on anything. The only one I have came on a barrel that I don't shoot so there is no reason to change it. They are lightweight and super strong but feels like I'm looking through a tiny tunnel with no magnification. I'd go 2-6X or a straight 4X.

i use 2x burris scopes on my rugers. i like it a lot. can't imagine "needing" anything else. they work great at revolver ranges and give good fov.

as you can see....people have different requirements or preferences.

since you got the 2x6 in possesion....try it, see how ya like it. see if it is too heavy, bulky etc....if ya like it yer set...if not....all ya gotta do is change to the 2x.
i think the higher x's would be great at the range, if it works ok for you. ya never know what opportunity it might provide in the field either.

We all have different tasts, I like it as long as it is fried...

I just like the 2-6... I think one of the main reasons I sold my Bullberry Encore in 44 was because it wore a 2x Leupold...

I would go with the Bushnell. You may not need the 6x while hunting but it sure comes in handy when shooting the bench at the range. I have one on my 454 and will eventually put one on my 460.

Go with the Bushnell. Good glass for the money and picks up light well at dusk. The 2x Leupold makes things look farther to me
\:\)
Shot a deer one time at 115 yards with the 454 that had a 2x Lupy on it. Scope was replaced the next week and I never bought another. I did have one fail before though. Was shooting a 44 and it looked funny when I shot, sort of blurry, so I went ahead and shot again. Hit the little gong at 110 yards but the inside of the scope looked like a kaleidoscope. one of the internal lenses came apart. It was an old 2x that had a one piece tube. Leupold replaced it and it the new one was back in time for a hunt in Michigan that I was getting ready for when the scope came apart. I have one on a 358 JDJ because it was on there when I bought it, only 2x in the house

Gentlemen,
With a Leupold scope, if you crank the eyepiece out, it will slightly increase the magnification. If you crank it in, it will decrease the magnification. Of course there is a limit to how much a person will be able to crank one way or the other, as the eyepiece adjustment is actually there to adjust the sharpness of the reticle for individuals' eyesight.

243 fan, for a revolver, I prefer the 2X or 4X Leupold.

I have 2x leupolds on all but one of my wheel guns and the odd one has a 2x Weaver.

I like the FOV on the 2x and it is plenty mag for me @ 100yds

If you plan on shooting over 100 much may want to look at the 4x

I like the look and size of the fixed scopes-- most varibles are a inch or two longer and weight a little more

All my SSP's wear varibles

2-6X Elite is far more versitile. I've had one on a .500 S&W for 4 years with no problems. Use 2X for 20-30 yd. groundhogs. Used 6X for 129 yd. brown bear. Tough, dependable, dial what you want. What more could you want?

I too have a 2x leoupold that came on a .358 JDJ barrel and it is not enough scope. Objects seem farther away thru the scope than with the naked eye. Four X is the lowest I want anymore, and a Variable lets you go up and down as needed. I like clicks on my scope adjustments also and the 2X leoupold dosen't have them.

Yay!! I'm actually not alone in this discussion of wanting MORE magnification on a revolver.....usually I'm the only one saying that!

I have a 356 Winchester it has a 2-7 Burris (much like your 358 JDJ) In my mind the 2X would be way to small to get all you need out of that gun. I shoot my most of the time on 4-7X however I like the fact I can dial it down to 2X and get that wide FOV then dial it back once I get the target in view-- but that is a big SSP. I like to have my wheel guns a little more simple I look at the 2X on those guns as a hot rod open sight that I do not have to line up.

Dan, I get the same questions... lol "I" like the 2-6(or2-7) The advantages are you can put it on 2 or 6 power. The downside, a few more onces of weight. Fixed scopes have fewer parts and have a history of being reliable.

I just fare the advantages of 6 power when shooting squirrels at 50 yards. Some of the big bores we shoot are more accurate than we give them credit. I think a variable scope brings out the best in them...

I also like the variables, but for myself a 1.5-4x is perfect.

most of my hunting is done at close range and especially bear hunting , the 1.5x is awesome for that.

That being said I am also deer hunting with the same rig and it is nice on the longer shots to have the option of turning it up to 4x. nice part about my 1.5-4x is that even turned up to 4 the eye relief is still at arms length, whereas my 2-7x the relief gets shorter.

I just wish there were more options in the 1.5x- 4x

I have both and really prefur the Elite 2x6 for my SBH Bisley Hunter....It is just right for this gun. The HD Rain guard makes it even better.. The eye-relief is real tight on 6X but it is a great scope.

Mister, why do you carry a 45? "Because Sam Colt don't make a 46."

I have a 2x leupold on one of my revolvers (RBHunter) and I like it on that gun. My son is the main operator behind it and he loves it. I've had more 2x's on handguns than anything, but my hunting areas are typically limited to 75 yard shots.

I also have two variables on revolvers (454C & 475L); ones a 2.5x8 Leupold and the other a 2.5x8 Nikon. With both, I find myself using them on 4x-6x most of the time while hunting. I have never used a bushnell, so can't comment on them; but may possibly be my next purshase. One down fall of the variables, as mentioned before, is they're a little longer and heavier. All in all, a variable gives you more options: 2x, 3x, 4x, 4.5x........

To me it's alot about what a true revolver shot is going to be made at and how the scope aesthetically fits the gun. On standard size revolvers I'm not shooting past 100yds and most shots would be under that by quite a bit so I prefer a fixed power and or iron sights but now with my eyes starting to change I'm switching to red dots. I did run variable Leupolds on my X frames but they were capable of more, especially the 460 but size of the guns also didn't make them look out of balance with a variable. That's also one of my big problems with the Burris scopes is that they are just too big and gawdy but if you run out of bullets you can always beat the deer to death with the scope.

243Fan,

I have Leupold's in 2X, 4X, and the VX-3 2.5-8 on revolvers, as well as a couple of the Bushy Elite's - and one is on a revolver...

As far as variables go, the Elite is a compact lightweight scope and shouldn't overwhelm the barrel-mounting position of your SBHH. Very good optics for the $$$, and provide you the extra zoom when you want to go out past 100. The only 2X Leupy I'm currently using resides on my Redhawk 44, and compliments that gun nicely in terms of size and capability. If you expect shots ranging out towards 100 as opposed to the closer end of the spectrum, I would go with the Bushnell - on the other hand, if you expect the majority of your hunting to be done 50 and in, go with the size advantage of the Leupold...or compromise on the 4X. How's that for muddying the water?!

My variables stay between 4x and 6x most of the time. The 8x on the weaver is nice for sighting in and when you have plenty of time ,but it is picky about eye placement on 8x .I have never felt handicaped or over scoped with a 4x scope, but I have found myself wanting more power than the 2 X leoupold had to offer. The .358 JDJ is a fine round but I need more X's on it, as deer look farther away thru the scope than with the naked eye.The only down side to a scoped pistol is I cant get on moving game with it. That is why I carry an open sighted Ruger .45 colt as a second gun.

Well..... after examining both scopes, I decided to go with the Bushnell Elite 2-6. I liked it really well. Thanks for all your input. I love this forum!

I prefer the 2-6 Bushnell Elite 3200; I also have an older 2-6 Bausch & Lomb Elite 3000 on my FA .454 Casull. They were bought out by Bushnell.

Back when Randy Smith worked for Freedom Arms and part of his job was to field test the .454, he killed LOTS of big game and he told me to go with that scope and the FA 260 bullet.

I did and have never looked back.

Gregg would you happen to know what size the objective lens on the 2-6 Bushnell Elite 3200 is?

Thanks Norm

Gregg,

I have seen your bulls that you have taken with your 454's and 260gr FA bullets. I am tempted to get some of those bullets to have with my FA 83 (it just seems right) before they all go the way of the dinosaur!

They looked like great bullets...

By my personal measurements it agrees with the factory specs of 32 mm.

GlennS,

Yes that is what I hear.

I know the 240 and 300 are not available, but they do still have the 260 for sale at the FA website. I can't imagine they will be around for that much longer though!

I agree that looking through a 2x makes things look smaller, I would look at a fixed 4x or a 2-6 vari.

Has anyone had any experience mith Weigand scope base mounted on a Ruger super blackhawk? I'm lookoing at drilling the top strap and scoping my super. My 60+ eyes no longer pick up the iron sights very clearly. I can still hold my own in good light, but for huntig the optical devices are the way to go. Thanks's Lonnie

I have a Weigand scope base on my Ruger SBH with Leupold rings and a Leupold 2X scope. I've had it on that gun for four years. I had the base installed by a gunsmith. I've had no problems at all. Very satisfied.

I've had them on many of my Rugers and I've installed alot of them for my customers and never had a problem.
