Not sure of your experience but from the wording in your post IMHO go with a Ruger single action in the .44 mag as you requested; ie: a standard Ruger Super Blackhawk in the factory barrel length of 7 1/2" with factory iron sights. And once you have mastered that, you can go on from there.

I agree with Gregg if this is your first big bore. If you plan on scoping it you might go with a Hunter model for easier mounting although I prefer a standard blackhawk with a tap and drill mount. The 44 is a good choice if this is your first big bore since ammo is more readily available than 45LC or any of the big bruisers. You can also shoot 44 spcl to get used to the gun. The one thing I'll say though is invest in an action job right out the gate as none of the factory guns have a decent trigger except maybe the smith and wessons.

You can't go wrong with that choice...I recently got the same one and have not been disappointed! The only real debate for me is what to put on top of it : )

The God who gave us such a beautiful land, wonderful game, and the sport of hunting is worth knowing.

This is good advice IMO.

Those of us that do know it all just have to monitor ourselves so as not to offend those that don't.....it sure can be tough at times!

But to really contribute to this topic....when learning something new (shooting a handgun in this instance) it is easiest for me to learn by eliminating most of the variables. Since I was good with a scoped weapon when I converted to a handgun, I started with a scoped handgun that way I could learn all the handgun basics (dealing with the grip, trigger, and recoil) w/o having to worry about mastering the iron sights to shoot really well. Trying to learn to shoot irons while learning everything else can be a big deterant to gaining confidence with a handgun...using a scope can help eliminate that.

So if you are considering the Hunter model guns, then I call that a can't miss chance! They are great scoped (both of mine are) and by loosening two bolts you can be shooting irons.

Any configuration of Ruger in 44 or larger is a great gun. Solid shooters. Great accuracy. A lot of different configurations in either double or single action. You cant go wrong there. Go put one in your hand and see what you think. Better yet if you know a friend that has one see if they will let you try it out. Good luck and good hunting!
