Was looking into Safes the other day and there are so many options. I am sure many of them will suffice. Does anyone know of one they would highly recommend or highly avoid?

The only suggestion I have is get the biggest one made. They don't hold near as much stuff as they advertise if you have any scoped rifles or things like AR's.

Do they typically say 1 cubic foot per gun, or is that simply how it works out for your model?

They will hold as many as they advertise but you have to put everything in a gun sock or they come out looking like they been on a few safaris. The benefit of a large one over two smaller ones is the weight makes them hard to steal even if they aren't bolted down.

depends on where it's going to be placed also, with the larger safes it's common to need to reinforce the floor where it's going to sit if it's going inside a house.

I've had a Liberty Presidential model for ages. It's the largest they have. Had all shelves put in it for handguns. Excellant quality.

Some of the Redhead-branded models from BassPro are made by Granite (who makes for Browning), and usually run on seasonal sales. And get one bigger than you think you need...they breed in there. Versatile brand gun racks will help you organize everything from wheelguns to singleshots.

I was just putting some stuff back in mine and repositioning some long guns in the safe this evening...ducks on the menu tomorrow. I hate hearing the clank of metal on metal or metal on a pretty wood stock. I know some would say get rid of those silly long guns, but sorry guys, can't give up the rifles (nor shotguns) just yet...I'm an equal opportunity "Hitman" still...bows, rifles, shotguns, but yes, mostly handguns.

don't have one yet, but it WILL be a liberty. local dealer has em n they are great quality. actually they are only a bit more than the cheaper brands found at the other various outlets.
local tractor supply has a cheaper "cannon" that is pretty big and a few hundred less. maybe it would suffice, but yer talkn scrimpin on an heirloom that can protect a fortune for generations....lol.

Liberty safes are known for their quality. I like their internal hidden hinges. Good advice from above...get the biggest safe you can afford.

I am not much of a shopper, but I did join the black friday crowd this year. Menards had a special on a Safari (Made by Cannon) 24 gun model for $400, I bought 2. They have a 1200 degree rating for 1/2 hour, to get into the one hour rating prices jump quickly. Even these smaller models are HEAVY about 450 lbs empty, mine are sitting side by side on concrete.

Forget the Liberty. If I lived in the lower 48 I'd buy one of these. http://www.sturdysafe.com/

spend some time checking out their videos.

The sturdy safe looks like its pretty quality, but I couldn't find where their dealers are. i'm not one for buying something I can't see. I will say though, that they do a great job of educating you about gun safes on the site.

I have a Bulldog, a Browning, and a Century. All work like they supposed to.
