Has anyone done any BP handgun hunting for deer-sized game? I question being able to generate enough muzzle velocity to do this.
Doing so ethically is my major concern. Approximately 100 yds would be the max I would allow myself. What do you guys think? It seems converting a T/S Encore Pro Hunter .50cal would be pretty straight foreward. With a 16" barrel it would be interesting if ethical.

Welcome to the forum. As long as you use a "hunting" load, that gun has plenty of power. Find a bullet/powder charge thats accurate and get in a lot of practice. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

If I remember right Gregg Richter takes an antelope with a .50 muzzleloader on his DVD. Gregg gave me a copy of that antelope video when I met him at a range several years ago so I might be wrong but I think its on his Handgunning Mule Deer and Pronghorn Antelope DVD also. I have not watched the DVD in a while. If you don't have it already, pick it up, you will enjoy it.

The 209X50 Encore can be loaded to match .454 Casull energy levels.

I have a 15 inch 209X50 TC Encore barrel. TC used to make these. I had to play around with different loads until I found one that works in my gun. I use 100 grs. of 777 and a saboted 45 cal. 300 gr. XTP bullet. I've taken deer and wild hogs with it.

I use 100 gr. of Blackhorn 209 and a 200gr. shockwave and it shoots well and it will shoot the same powder charge with a 275 maxi-hunter almost as good as the shockwave. Picked mine up at a gun show last year.

Welcome

WOW nice ELK!!!!

For whitetails I have used the Rem58 on several successful hunts... A round ball and real BP will shoot right through them giveing complete penitration on broadside shots.

Mister, why do you carry a 45? "Because Sam Colt don't make a 46."

Seeing your success with your remington 1858 makes me want to try my 1851 navy and see what happens
