Anyone have one of the original Smith & Wesson md29s with the barrell slots for scope mounting. I've never seen one in person. Their beautiful magazine adds fueled my passion for handgun hunting many years ago.

I don't own any but have seen a couple, years ago. It was said that they were discontinued after several instances where the rings pulled loose from the barrel in recoil (taking a piece of the barrel around the ring cut out with them) and sending rings, scope etc. into flight.

Sorry to here about that. I'm suprised since ruger's used that system for years. I seem to remember the same system was available on the L frame 357s as well.

The Ruger rib and scope ring cuts are MUCH more substantial than those on the 29.

Yep that's one I remember. I thought it was one of the coolest looking guns ever. I loved the finger groove grips. Back then I spent many a dollar on any magazine with an article on handgun hunting. Wish I had saved them all.
