So I am shooting a double tap 300 grian hp. I beleive the bullet to be from the nosler sporting line. Not knowing much about this bullet I tryed to recover one from a tree today and was successful. The bullet traveled through a cardboard box, a chunk of asphalt, and into a tree. This is what I recovered.

It weighed in at 296.7 (wanted to play around with my new reloading scales!)

I know it is very different from shooting an animal but still thought it was neat. My only concern was that it only traveled about 4 inches into solid wood, I figured it would do better than that.

Well, that wasn't the first thing it hit tho. What specie of tree?

That fact that it retained nearly all its weight is a good sign.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Clayton,

I wouldn't be concerned about that at all - like Rod said, the bullet held together extremely well despite much resistance. And vitals and flesh will be easier to penetrate than a solid tree trunk. It should handle those 'Bama whitetails just fine!

That bullet will work well on deer, no doubt. But it is a hollow-point and you simply won't get maximum penetration out of it, but 4-inches of tree is nothing to sneeze at. And it didn't shed any weight. Don't worry. If the accuracy is there, you are in good shape.

What little I have used the Nosler sporting bullets I liked them alot. They were always accurate and relatively tough. For jacketed in 44/45 calibers this would be the one I'd choose.
