Found a few articles today after watching the Ruger Shot Show videos. Turns out I learned that Larry Weishuhn is a big Super blackhawk hunter fan. Did a little more research and found some of his blog postings. He even alludes to an Elk he took with the SBHH that will appear on an upcoming outdoors show!

Also came across a video of him using the revolver on a deer hunt. Watching it now :-)

He is also a fan of the .30/30 in a Contender.

Yup, I always assumed if I was going to see Larry shoot something with a handgun, it would be a Contender. And if Dick Metcalf, it was going to be some flavor of S&W. In the blog SB linked, Larry kind of poo-poo's the 460 S&W. Not surprising.

As do I. Every show I've seen him hunt on he has carried an Encore 30-06 pistol, in a Pistol Packaging Bandito Belt rig. Variety is good.

Rod,

Opps you are correct. I used the term Contender generically to mean Thompson. Yes, he is an Encore guy.

I have only fired the 500 S & W once, so no expert but I do agree that much like the 44Mag, S&W is certainly after the gotta have the biggest market. And as such, the 500 is quite the handful, and probably a bad first for many folks.

Got a buddy who loves his, and he said as I shoot the 454 (FA) that I have to get the 460. I tried to explain why I would not, especially since he has to carry his in a backpack when hunting with other arms. Perhaps too much of a good thing for this practical hunter.

As a dedicated handgun hunter, we've certainly seen Larry with his share of T/C's...but now hunting and appearing on Ruger's show, I'm sure we'll see a whole bunch more of the SBH and SRH. No flame or disrespect, a guy's gotta pay the bills, and who wouldn't want free guns?!

Interesting that he talks about the recoil and dislike of the grip frame in the double action, but will be hunting some this season with the Casull in the SRH.

You can't turn down sponsorship. It shows great respect for Larry that they were able to hook up. I have seen nearly all the greats change makers at some time, shooters and fishers alike, and some many times. I loves my Rugers and will enjoy watching Larry kill something with them.

Rod - I don't fault him a bit, and I love my Rugers as well...hopefully the notoriety that Larry carries in the industry will help push handgun hunting along with all the manufacturers!

I didn't think that you did, was just reinforcing your point. I was kind of taken aback when Jim Shockey swapped his trusty front stuffer, but it is just a sign of the times....

"The Zeiss pistol scope is a story in itself. A few years ago I worked with Zeiss in developing a pistol or long eye relief scope. They produced less than a hand full of these Conquest scopes and then sent two of them for me to use.. and I have. Whether or not they’ll ever put them into their line-up of products, I’m not sure. But I will tell you this, the Zeiss pistol scopes are by far the best I have ever had mounted on a hunting handgun, bar none! "

-taken from the above article by Larry

Now this I find interesting! I have often wondered why Swarovsky or Zeiss does not have a handgun scope on the market. I guess they almost did...

Larry is a big fan of the 309 JDJ in a contender. He's killed a lot of good deer and such with it. He has a good book out there called Hunters moon or something like that. He switched over to the encore later when it came out. In fact, he shot a moose with the prototype gun about a day after it was completed with Ken French. I've always like Larry's work. Just a nice guy it seems.

Yeah, you know i was wondering that as well. I even went over to the zeiss website, and couldn't find a thing comparable to what he had. That video doesn't appear to be too old...possibly a year given production and filming etc. Maybe it is still in the works?

It would be neat if Zeiss offered a couple of handgun scopes.

I remember when I used to read anything I could find handgun hunting related and at the time was tough to find, reading about Larry shooting big bucks with the super bh hunter really made me want one. So when they reintroduced them in the fall of 2001, I got the first one to hit the streets in our town. I was late to an exam but I finally had my hunter :). He also used to use an anaconda a good bit. He was one of the few I could find articles by back then that really hunted with the revolver enough to write about it. And since that was what I preferred to use, they always got my attention.

I would love to see a Zeiss hg scope!!

Where did you see this at? I saw him on his hunting show using an Encore in the .460 and he had good things to say about it. Also his Signature Encore Pistol comes in 2 choice for caliber, one being the .460.

Maybe with the new "air time" Ruger will start thinking about a SBH in 454 or 475. I would love to see that.

Not going to happen, unfortunately. I have been round and round with them on the .480 single action, and they have no plans to do it. Too bad, really.

I said kind of as he mentions in his blog that folks buy the big frame revolvers and are only able to shoot a few rounds before giving up on the gun. It is just a subtle way of saying they are too much for some. At least that is how I read it.

Anybody see the show last year where Larry missed a big Iowa whitetail using a 460 Encore (scoped) I was surprised they showed it on TV. Several years ago him & Sheriff Jim Wilson did a write up in Shooting Times with Larry promoting the single shots for hunting & Jim Wilson preferring the sixguns, good article. Both have been good for our sport for a long time.

I read Weishuhn's comment thus -- the round is not fun to shoot for some folks.

It was his way of 'poo pooing' their decision to buy the gun, not his way of poo pooing the cartridge.

The Zeiss pistol scope was derailed by the powers that be at Zeiss because of other committments. My understanding is the Zeiss pistol scope will be a reality in 2013, if not before.

I figure you mean his Knight (ML Rifle) for the T/C? (also ML Rifle)

Of course you all know that T/C introduced an Encore Model called the "Larry Weishuhn Limited Edition Series."

http://www.nrahuntersrights.org/Article.aspx?id=3391

I tried to get one in the .308 for the 2010 HHI Antelope Hunt from my contact there at T/C but was unable to. Looks like a beautiful gun, although I have not held one yet.

Mr.Weishuhn is a real gentleman. He's a no BS kind of guy. I've spoken with him at several past Shot Shows and always gotten good advice. He and Ruger are a perfect match. Thanks for posting the videos. Since Jim Shockey has shot everything under the sun with a smokepole, it's only logical to move on to other hunts with a "smokeless" rifle. My $.02 worth.
