Last month I picked up an Encore with a 26" 300 Win Mag barrel. I had no interest in the barrel and immediately posted it for sale. Apparently the barrel did not interest anyone else since I had no replies. Then I started thinking about having it converted into a handgun barrel. I contacted Rod at Dixie Firearms and he told me about his 300 WM barrel. It sounded like a great handgun round so I packed it up and sent it to him. Rod cut the barrel down, added a brake and did a matte blue finish. I got the barrel back yesterday and was very impressed with the quality of Rods work. I mounted a Bushnell 3200 scope and made a quick range trip this morning. On the first shot I braced myself for some heavy recoil. Rod told me I would be surprised at how mild the recoil was but this is a guy who shoots a .458 WM handgun. He was right! The recoil was about the same as my 15" .308 Win or 375JDJ barrels without brakes. I sighted in using some factory ammo I got with the gun. It was about 20 degrees out with heavy winds but the barrel still shot around 1.5" at 100 yards using Winchester Super X 180 grain Power Point ammo. This load averaged 2530 fps. I look forward to seeing what it will do with handloads. Excellent work Rod!

Glad you like it Phil, it will really start to shine with handloads. I'll look up the load I'm using and send it to you to try.

Nice lookin' rig, and a shooter to boot. You have your hammer now.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Phil, the load I'm using is out of the Nosler book and is 77.0gr of IMR7828 and mine shoots MOA with it. It was the first load I tried because I had a bunch of 7828 from when I was loading for my 300 and 375 Rum's. I also already had a bunch of 180BT's and Fail Safes so once I had it settled in with the BT's I ordered some Accubonds and they as normal shot to the same poi. I looked up the H1000 Kyode was talking about in my Hodgdon book and it's about identical in velocity to the 7828 but at 10,000psi less so I may have to try some of that since less pressure in the encore would be somewhat a plus. The only other thing I'll add is I was thinking these short barrels might really shine with the 165gr Accubond/BT because you still have a good BC but you should be able to crank it up another 100-200fps. I'll probably try that too when I deplete my 180's and actually have time to do some load development, right now if it shoots decent I'm sticking with it until I have more time.

Been there and done that I have had two 7mm Dakota barrel and one 7.82 Patriot barrel on XP's. They are small compared to some others....

Okay you guys. I am weak-willed when it comes to big long-range SP's, but I am not going to a 50 BMG in any kind of SP. My two Chey-Tac rounds (375 Snipe-Tac and 408 Chey-Tac) are more than enough for big specialty pistols that I will actually use.

I watched a show on the 408 shortly after they came out with the 408, they had the whole system with the hand held tool that I guess you'd basicly call a computer for calculating your scope adjustments. They had a SEAL sniper doing the shooting and it was very impressive.

I saw something similiar in the back of one of my gun Blue books but the company apparently went out of business (wonder why) but it had a single pistol grip. I'd shoot it once, twice if I liked it

Not even interested! Even in a rifle I would rather have the Chey-Tac or Chey-Tac wildcat than a 50 any day. I am talking in terms of LR hunting and shooting. I don't plan on taking out vehicles or taking out people behind barriers. Come on. Tell me y'all wouldn't like to have one of these. Looks like it might be fun to shoot - once. .50 BMG Pistol

That is about 400 fps slower than what Winchester says they accomplished in a rifle. I bet some loading will get you closer to a 300 fps gap to a rifle. At sea level with your factory ammo with a 100 yard zero you will have at 500 yards a drop of 13.50 MOA and a wind correction with a 10mph full value 4.75 MOA (or it drifts 25.1"). If energy is an issue at 500 yards 1085 with impact velocity at 500 yards is 1648fps. It is about 100 fps slower than what Winchester's Powerpoint 308Win load with the 180 grain bullet (2620 fps) Last month I picked up an Encore with a 26" 300 Win Mag barrel. I had no interest in the barrel and immediately posted it for sale. Apparently the barrel did not interest anyone else since I had no replies. I don't plan on taking out vehicles or taking out people behind barriers. We don't carry concealed because we PLAN on using it, but do carry just IN CASE we need to. Come on Ernie.....get my drift!

With the larger head size of the WM (more back thrust with the same pressure than you will get with the 06/308 head size .473), be checking the case length as you start working up your load.

As a comparison consider my 16.5 inch 7.82 Patriot XP. My 7.82 Patriot XP would run a 150 NBT just over 3000 fps, and the 180 Sierra Game King was around 2750 fps. The Patriot is a tad larger than 300 WSM, but smaller in capacity than the 300 WM. Again, you cannot run a larger head size like the WM or RM to the same pressure in an Encore like you can with a .473 head size.

I call it 2700 fps but I had an avg of 2683 with the 180gr BT's and I know I still have room. As long as his headspace on the frame is good it shouldn't have any issues. Pab if that thing starts stretching brass let me know because there is a fix for it. Ernie I still think you'd look good with an oversized XP looking bolt pistol in 50BMG, besides you never know when you may have to stop and armored hummer, peterbilt, kenworth, etc.

Now you are starting to sound like sscoyote (Steve H.) Not really my line of work
Besides I do not always have a SP bolt rig with me at all times.
