I stopped at my local gun shop today.he has a ruger birdshead vaquero .45 colt with 3 3/4 inch barrel blued.i'm considering it for a general cary / woods gun. it would be replacing my supper blackhawk .44 7 1/2 barrel. I find the sbh too big it stays home most of the time unless i am after deer.Even when after deer i prefer my contender.

any thaughts?

that would probably make a nice little carry gun. I have this one I built for my wife originally but now I use it most. It's a 3 3/4" three screw converted to 44spcl and I've got a very accurate load pushing a 255gr WFN to 1050fps so it's a lethal back up weapon. I also shortened the length of the grip to lighten the gun and to make it more compact. It's probably not a whole lot bigger than the birds head grip. It's super nice to carry, it's so light you don't even know you have it and even with the stout spcl load recoil is nothing.

Sounds like a plan Stan. The 45 can be loaded from mild to wild so you should be able to find something that shoots easy and still has some snuff.

this is a new vaquero.on the mid frame.I am thinking the mid frame is lighter easyer to carry but not as strong.the worst i will ever encounter should not need supper hot loads anyway.No brown bear,or polar bear in NY.even if i do go west i would not feel under gunned with a .45.The .45 has taken everything in north america without major problems it can do it for me.

there is something to be said for smaller carry guns over the biggest most powerfull guns around.you are more likely to have it with you if it is easy to carry.The gun you leave in the safe because it is too big to carry all day never shoots anything.

Today my SBH was sold cash is in my hand.I will be purchasing The vaquero next week.Pay for it, go to register it, then go back to the dealer and pick it up.Alot of wasted time and gas to follow NY law.I want to move when the kids grow up.Anyone know a gun friendly state with good hunting and trapping?

most of the West is good, even as liberal as Oregon has become it has the most lax gun laws on the west coast and lots of critters but personally I'm looking to go further east to idaho, wyoming or montana.

Got a good friend living in Eagle, ID (near Boise), who loves it. Go buy a gun, and take it right home. Get a CCW pretty easily. Good hunting and fishing. But, like all states, there has been an influx of ingoranuses (liberals) which must be dealt with. Find a small town not too far from a larger one (women need shopping) or get some acreage. I always liked the Salmon area--used to fish on the middle fork of the Salmon every summer and camp in my truck. I lived in the mountains for many years, and in some kind of winter for 44 years (northern WI, Fairbaks, AK, and Truckee, CA area), so the shine has worn off cold and snow for me. Especially when you have to shovel the roof. The Oregon coast is what I want, with temps between 45-75 most of the time. My acreage is above the tsunami line and out of the fog and at the end of the road. Enough room for a pistol range on site. My only nearby neighbor builds motorcycles and has a full machine shop and likes to shoot.
Take some time to do research, and make sure your wife will be happy, too.

been there done that, I should have known when my 95lb husky kept trying to eat my ex that there was a problem. Unfortunately I kept the wife and got rid of the dog, should have kept the dog and dumped the wife. That's why I trust dogs more than people now!!!!!!!

Well, I have always believed that absence DOES make the heart grow fonder. I like my first wife way more now that we've been divorced for 20 years!

It's been 14yrs and I sure do miss my ex alot but my aim is getting better!!

Reminds me of the guy who bought his wife a cemetary plot for her birthday. The next year, he didn't get her anything. She said "What's up with you?!? You didn't get me anything for my birthday!" He replied "Why should I?, you didn't even use what I got you last year!"

I shot one of thes for the fast draw cowboy shoot. It is easy out of the holster. It was fun to shoot. Nice folks to let me shoot it too.
