Today is the first time that I have had to opportunity to fire the 500 WE cylinder that I received from FA a couple of weeks ago. Sent 55 rounds down range ---- getting the scope set & banging steel (10 rounds). 45 rounds over the chrony getting an idea of what my load were doing. I was using 350 gr jacketed & 370 gr casts. They were not "full-house" loads, rather they averaged from near 1200 to mid-1300 mv.

The primary point of this post is to give you my feel for the 500 WE with these loads. It is not abusive, in fact it is pleasant to shoot --- at least for me. If you are a "big bore" freak like some of us, this one is OK at these levels. I am sure if you want to push it, it will hurt.

After I got the scope close at 25 yds with the 350 gr jacketed at 1300+, I started on my steel targets -- 50 yds, 75 yds, 85 yds, 96 yds. It was just putting a big "hit" in the middle of each of them. I do not know that I need more velocity than this. When that 50 cal bullet hits the steel, it moves. Too much fun!!!!!!!!!! This may be my new "fun gun."

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

Sorry, I don't know all the calibers, chamberings, and whatnot. What is the difference between the 500WE you have, and a 500 smith and wesson? I'm one of the big bore freaks, but don't know that I have seen 500WE used anywhere.

Sorry, still learnin...

The 500 Wyoming Express is a propriety cartridge of Freedom Arms. It is the longest COL case that Baker could squeeze into the FA83 frame. The case has a belt ( similar to the 450 Marlin or other belted magnums for headspacing without requiring a rim that wouldn't fit in the confines of the '83s cylinder ). it fires a 0.500 dia. bullet, ideal wt. 440 grains, according to Bob Baker. Power wise it is similar to the 500 JRH. The history, specs, and load data are on Freedom Arms website: http://www.freedomarms.com . It is more than the 50 Action Express; but, less than the 500 S&W Magnum. That being said, it can still be a "handful!"

HMMM.... so is it comparable to the 460 smith and wesson? I'd like to get another big bore sometime down the road, but not something that will be similar to the 460.

it's a bigger diameter bullet than a 460 smith, but it's not even close in the velocity dept. it's also not even close to being as obnoxious to run around with cuz the gun size is the same as all FA 83's. bottom line is anything ya hit with any of those revolvers is gonna be dead, the 500 WE in my estimation is at it's best running loads in the 1000fps to 1200fps.

i've toyed with the idea of getting one with a matching 50 AE cylinder and also having it sent off and getting a 500 JRH cylinder as well.

when run full bore if you load to max loads on FA website, it is an absolute handful.

i love it!!

Rod, too.

Obnoxious?? How could you POSSIBLY say that?? Besides, if I run out of bullets, I can always throw the gun and get ALMOST the same affect! It also doubles as a GREAT sledge hammer. It's perfect for chucking wheels on a semi truck to prevent it from rolling down hill. AWESOME boat anchor for the yacht!!!

I'd hardly say Obnoxious -- it's a multi tasker!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Ah yes, Doc, but the JRH was actually designed with the Model 83 in mind and it fits the confines quite nicely!
