How much performance do you give up with a 12" barrel in 7mm-08 vs. a 15" barrel. I know there will be some velocity loss, but is it enough to worry about. And what about accuracy?

accuracy was comparable in my factory 12" and 15" 7mm-08 barrels, but recoil was much more noticeable with the 12" barrel (neither one was ported and both were identical except for length.) Never looked at a velocity difference as I settled on the 15" for reduced recoil/muzzle rise.

you guys may know about this but here is is a cool website on this subject. It doesn't cover every round and caliber, and maybe not the best source of info but interesting....

A buddy of mine had a T/C Custom Shop 12" 7mm-08 several years ago. He wanted to shoot 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips so that is what I started with. Using H-4895 I was able to get sub MOA groups but velocity was the same as a 14" 7-30 Waters (2399FPS). Recoil and muzzle blast was substantial.

Not being satisfied I switched to 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips, again loaded with H-4895 Accuracy was about the same as was velocity (2375 FPS if I remember right). Again recoil and muzzle blast was substantial.

Never did do anything with a 15" 7mm-08 so have nothing to compare the 12" to.
