Does anyone have a recommendation for what powder to use with the scoop that comes with the 44 mag Lee Loader kit to get 44 Special velocities with 220-240 gr. bullets? Thanks for any help.

The scoops are there to get you in the neighborhood, you need a scale to finish the job, and a good powder measure to repeat it.

I have found that the Lee scoops are not very accurate. Buy an electronic scale.

The scoops are not exact, buy a scale, much more precise.

You could load Trail Boss by the scoop, and it will give cowboy velocities.

there should be a load card that came with your dies and scoop but like the others said a scale is a much better and safer way to go. I generally use HS6 for my reduced loads but the trail boss the other Rod mentioned is in a form that will take up more case capacity which will help eliminate the possibility of a double charge and generally will improve accuracy.

profm,

Welcome to HHM. I have used the Lee Loaders and Lee dippers for years, with good results. What the folks say about the scales IS certainly true; however, you can assemble good AND safe ammo with the Lee dippers. Follow the instructions carefully, included with the loader. The info give loads with the dipper included using different powders and bullet weights and types. You can also refer to one of the many handloading guides ( online ( for example: http://www.hodgdon.com , http://www.ramshotpowders.com , http://www.accuratearms.com ) and in print. When you find a load and powder that meets your needs, refer to the info that 24mileboy recommends. My first handloading was done when I was 12 with a Lee 44 Mag Lee Loader; and, I safely loaded thousands of rounds with that setup, Lee dipper inclusive. Good luck. As you can see there is a wealth of info born from experience on this site. Return frequently and keep us updated on your experiences.

I started with the Lee loaders also and my loads were/are always accurate at the range, but for versatility ,you need a good scale.
