One thing about a bipod. If you sight in with one attached to your gun, it has to stay attached from then on or your POI may experience a significant change. I prefer a secondary support, like a tripod or tree or shooting stix. I never seem to be in a position where a bipod will work when I hunt, but that's just me.
Rod, too.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I have one on my Tender and Encore 7.08. They come in handy at the range and as for hunting I plan on leaving them on and using a tripod.

s4s4u So if I sight in without it attached the slide it back on the POI will change? Sorry to ask so many questions but this is all new to me Correct. Handguns flip at the muzzle when fired, and more weight on the front of the gun will reduce the amount of flip. It is as if you were to hold down on the forend with one shot and then release the forend for the next. The two shots will not find the same point on the target.
Rod, too.

Wow I would have never expected that Hmmmm.. so to bi pod or not to bi pod that is the question???? I gues O could put one on and when still hunting just leave it on and use the sticks too. Has anyone here seen used a Vesa Pod? I like the way it goes on and off for storage. http://stores.versapod.com/-strse-147/150-dsh-050-Versa-dsh-Pod%C2%AE-Sniper-Pod/Detail.bok

Been there done that. My Vanguard beats it hands down. I have some versa pod mounts and bipods for sale though. Vanguard quickly mounts to Picatinny rail mounts they sell or I have put inexpensive rails on some of my guns.

I tried my stand for my spotting scope with the vee from my shooting stick, worked out well. You can buy camera stands cheap and have a setup for each stand, i grab them at yard sales for a couple bucks. Shooting PMC 180g hp today, bought it cause it was cheap and wanted a light kicker. Nearly took my hand off every time i shot!!! Probably the hardest kicking stuff i've ever put through my SRH.44. weird stuff, not acurate at all.

I did a little unscientific experiment today with bipod and off rest with my Savage Striker .243. I got the opposite of what I expected. The first picture is 2 shots off bipod and second is after 2 shots off rest. Range is 50 yds at home so I may try longer range the next time I go to the gun club. It appears to be shooting about 1moa lower off the rest. I notice some small holes in the second picture. They are probably splatter from my wore out home made bullet trap behind the target

When i shot SP-101 off a rest it hit almost 12" low, offhand its dead on. I hit a soda can twice in a row with it at hundred yards once, lucky! don't understand the change with the rest. Only pistol i have that does that.

I have a Versa-Pod with a Picatinny quick-mount which is very good for my custom S&W 29-2. I've never been in a hunting situation where I've been able to use it, though, but I do use it for shooting-in sessions at the range. For this purpose it works very well.

The Harris bench-rest model is really small, and I have used them on my Encore's but as the others have mentioned it is hard to get into a field situtation that you can get in the right spot or position to shoot your gun off the bi pod quick. I switched to BOG-POD tri sticks...They also have NOW a special handgun rest attachment. Shooting off a good pack comes in very handy and can be used for a lot of different stuff. Just my 2 cents worth.

Rod, too.

I made a blast shield out of elk leather; folded over double and cemented together; to protect my pack when shooting a revolver. This is covered in my video.

If I have a single shot that I want to shoot off the bipod, I leave it on and shoot it either with the bipod extended on the ground or folded and over a pack or other rest. Never missed a shot or lost an animal due to the "difference."

Yep, what Gregg said, I use a piece of tanned leather folded over for my revolvers when I use my pack. My pack is a Cabelas day pack and has a heavy duty piece of suede leather already on the bottom. I stuff a goog thick fleece jacket in the bottom and it conforms nicely to the gun. I use a Harris bipod with my 6.5 contender. I use this gun from tree stands that have decent shooting rails on and afford a good base to set up. I took it with my on the HHI antelope hunt in Wyo 2 years ago and it did me no good and ended up laying it on my pack with it folded up.

I use Harris's all the time for hunting with SP's on the prairie that i frequent. For big game mountain hunting i use my pack only or between the legs for support. I also use a modified stadium seat for back support on the prairie that has another snap attached to the side straps for hands-free carry for walking long distances. I've found this system an absolute necessity for me. I also use an Accu-pod monopod to get the pistol grip of the gun high enough and quickly adjustable to use prone with a tall Harris-- NC Star also makes a bipod with the extra hardware to attach to barrels, and it's cheap too--

When shooting my revolvers, and practicing field positions off my backpack, i use a piece of leather. When hunting in the field i just use my gloves, they have a leather palm.
I know it may sound silly but were i hunt the least amount of weight i have to pack the better. All that little stuff can add up.
