Well I am finally going to take the leap into reloading. I am building my bench tomorrow and will buy the lee turret press kit next weekend. I realized after trying to order some 375 JDJ rounds from CorBon I was spending as much on ammo as a reloading kit. Get ready for the questions?

I'll start with this one. What brand primer is best to use? I will be loading 30-30, 375 jdj, and maybe my 45-70. I realize each of these might take a different primer. I am just wondering about prefferred brands.

They will all take large rifle primers. I like the Federal Gold Medal Match primers, but they are a little spendy. I have been having pretty good luck with the Winchester WLR primers and they are a little less money.

You do realize what you have gotten yourself into don't you?

Good luck and ask anything you kneed to know. These are good guys here and more than willing to share their wealth of knowledge.

I started with CCI large rifle primers and alway got good service with them. I did use the Federal 215's when I had my .375 H&H and they worked well.

Handloading your own ammo, and then shooting it, HMMMMM, it does"nt get any better. If you have any questions just ask, welcome to the addiction.

RLB,
I may not fully realize what I am getting into. I did not realize buying that one contender would have turned into 8 barrels, two frames, and a big bore revolver either.

When I went to the range with my 338 Fed last weekend I had the two top performing powders loaded with a 180gr Nosler Acc. The primmer of choice? Why I used Federal GM, CCI, and Win. I let the barrel tell me which one it liked and life is good. I did the same with my 308. Changing primers is just like changing powders. It can make a big difference.

Oh Lord. Bring him along slowly Duane. It's a little early for the "primer" discussion

Rod, too.

WOW, I needed that... ROLM butt off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The funny thing is didn’t mean a thing by it. All three of the primers I listed were standard large rifle primers…

You need to experiment. My 454 likes any primer except Federal. I replace a Federal primer in my normal load and you can immediately see a differance in group size.

I would suggest that before you begin seating primers and charging cases; rubberband off the back portion of a reloading manual and READ the front portion. All that boring stuff which explains the processes involved.

Ya know reading these reloading threads is a lot like watching Forrest Gump playing ping pong!

Too many people jump head first into reloading without learning much at all. I have been amazed at the questions supposed veteran reloading are asking on forums.

I read the front of the hornady book but still had some questions. I will definitely be crawling before I walk. I plan to read it again twice before charging the first round.

LOL...

I have been reloading for 20 years, a pup by the standards on this forum, and I still ask questions over certain topics. There is a difference in reading something and applying said application. Or in my case, I am just getting my toes in the water with casting. I have a LOOOOOOOOT of questions…
