I have a Freedom Arms Model 83 that I have lost the screws to mount the T'SOB mount to the gun. Rather than having to buy them from FA for an arm, is there anyone who can tell me what I need to buy to replace them. I can't seem to find anything that will fit correctly. Thanks

They should be 6-48 screws unless FA is doing something else then they could be 6-40's or 8-40's but the standard is the 6-48.

TNX. I will check that out. FA told me to call them, but wouldn't supply any info or price. SSK has yet to respond to my e-mail.

If you don't have any luck I can send some to you, you might need to shorten them to length but that's about it. How many are you missing?

I got in on this one kinda late but...
The screws that SSK uses, according to JD are an upgrade from the "standard gunsmith" screws; in that they are a hard industrial grade and much stronger. I have mounted dozens of scopes and used many many different types and sizes of "gunsmith screws," including both American and metric sizes. One of my greatest challenges was coming up with mount screws for an original Colt rifle small action in size 5-44. Most gunsmiths I asked hadn't even heard of that size; and none knew where to get them. I could find 5-40 very easily; but FINALLY found some 5-44.
Anyway, the point of my post is: I agree with JD; the screws he provides are definitely a cut above. JD sent me extras; if the size you need is #6 (FA may have gone to size 8 as they use one less screw on the T-Sob than SSK does) and you still need them then PM me your address and I will send you three.

If you run into weird screw sizes again let me know. I've got a bunch of 5-44 set screw in as that is what is used on one of the custom Ruger replacement front sights.
As far as strength goes you'll find the biggest difference in standard steel (blued) screws. Most of the SS screws you get are going to be very similiar in strength which is why you don't see "grades" on stainless steel hardware like you do on steel or alloy steel, such as grade 5, 8 etc. Stainless is also harder and stronger than most alloy steels and steel.

Yeah Rod, I have seen some really crappy almost "soft" screw heads. On this link the screws are heat treated which they should ALL be (JD's certainly are) but aren't on the "cheaper brands." There REALLY IS a difference in gunsmith screws. (all screws for that matter) http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=335/Product/LEUPOLD-TORX-SCREWS

Thank you all very much. I have been to three different places trying to duplicate these screws with no luck. So I have nothing to go on until you guys answered my question. I appreciate ALL the help.
