Hey guys. I am looking to buy a Ruger Super Redhawk .44 magnum. Now my brother has a red dot scope on his and has taken a few deer with it. I think it is very accurate as well BUT I don't like the iron sights being covered up. I am torn between putting a red dot on the gun and giving up on using the open sights or putting a 2X scope up high. I wouldn't be shooting past 100 hopefully so can anybody help out in the red dot/2X debate and then also which scope would you use of either. Again 100 yards or less and hopefully only around a $100.
Thanks!

Ultra Dot! A scope will black out early and late in the day. You will never shoot good off hand with a scope because you will see the movement and yank the trigger as you pass the place you want to hit.
Forget the open sights.
Don't use cheap dots, they break. Many, many will not fit between Ruger rings so stay with the 25mm or 30mm plain Ultra Dots.
Ruger rings are 25mm (or 1") but Ruger will swap for 30mm free if the rings have not been used.
Ultra Dot on my .475 sighting in at 50 yards.

I vote for anything that says Leupold on it!!! Their stuff is tough as nails, and you only buy it once. It will last as long as any gun.

Granted, ya pay well over $100, but like anything else, ya get what ya pay for. You've got a great gun, I'd say don't skimp on the glass. Leupold makes a GREAT 2X scope -- the FXII. Its gonna be a bit over $300, unless you get a used one off ebay, but I PROMISE you won't ever need another one. No batteries to worry about, and as tough as John Wayne.

I went cheap on my first sighting system, and paid for it. Will never do it again. I can't really say much on red dots cause the one I used was a Burris, and I was told it would handle my 460, which it did... for about 10 shots then was totally FUBAR. I returned it and went to Leupold and have never looked back. There are a lot of guys here that like the red dots and other similar devices, and they have really good luck with them. I myself am to scatter brained to have batteries running my optics, and would forget to turn it off, or forget to replace the batteries, so I choose to go with the traditional scope.

Like I said earlier, go with quality though, and you won't regret it. Red dot or traditional, don't skimp on the optics for such a good handgun!

Just my .02!!

I have a 4X leupold on a 10" 357 Maximum & it works very well if I'm set up on my backpack or leaning against a tree or something. I have an Ultra Dot on a 10" 44 maggie & it also works great if the shots are under 100 yds. The scope has held up well after quite a few rounds. The only problem I've had with it is on mule deer standing in the sagebrush, its really hard to see them as they blend in so well.
Still my favorite for my type of hunting is iron sights but a steady diet of one of the above is in the future because of aging eyes.

For shots 100yds or less, I use a 2X Leupold or a Millet red dot.

I am the odd ball, and I know I will always be in this conversation… LOL, However, I like the 2-6 Bushnell. I have had one on my SRH’s in 44 & 480. But the flip side of that coin is that the Bushnell is a very compact variable scope and has the option of 2x for general work, but can be turned up for technical work.

With the SRH you can remove the scope at will to use irons and then stick it back on there so you have the best of both worlds. Within 100 yards I will take an UltraDot, hands down. I have replaced nearly all my revolver scopes with UltraDota or reflex sights. No parralax, unlimited eye relief, and better light transmission.

I had a 4x Leupold on my Super Redhawk for some time. It was accurate but the field of view is to small for hunting. I would go with a Red-dot for hunting.

Haha thanks guys, no help on the debate BUUUUT it sounds like either would work just fine. I now have a list to pick through so I'll just go with the one that works best with me. Hope to have some nice pictures put up in the next year.

That's right! LOL find what works for you!

If you can, find a sporting goods store, like Cabela's or Bass Pro, that has several you can look threw. You don't have to buy them their, but you can get the hands on perspective...

I know I am posting a lot on this one, but I just really love my 44's...

Too often people underestimate the 44's accuracy capability. They will shoot! Sometimes you just have to spend the time to tweak your loads. The problem, or "a" problem IMHO, is that shooters often look at a 3 in group with a revolver at 100 yards and think they are doing well. In reality they are. However, a lot of revolvers will shoot better than the shooter. Don't sell your wheel gun short of it's capabilities. My SRH in 44 Mag will shoot 1.5in groups at 100 with handloads.

Here is the kicker. I do a lot better with variable scopes working up loads than I do fixed power. On the other hand, with my love affection with TC's, and as much as I shoot them, I have grown accustom to shooting variable scopes. LOL Again, find what works for YOU!

The point of this entire post. GET PICKY WITH YOUR REVOLVERS ACCURACY AND HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about a reflex type such as the Leupold deltapoint!

Very light weight and fast target aquisition; you don't have to look through a tube.

Or one of these? I love them, but they do take a little getting used to. Tubes do help to align your eye, but are not nearly as compact and you don't get dot flare in real low light like some tubes.

Worse than you putting down Elmer Keith. I doubt it.

I had to walk away from the computer because I was so mad. By the time I got back, you locked the thread, so your response is here.

it's time to let it go. That whole mess was blown way out of proportion. We all (including Gregg) understand that Keith was a major asset to this sport early on as was Dick Casull and then John Linebaugh in their cartridge development. But just like shots Howard Hill took with a long bow would be considered unethical in todays hunting community so are some of the things that Keith did.

Well, I just picked up my first Super Redhawk in 44 Mag just recently myself.
I am putting a Bushnell variable on myself, because that is what I have and I will be using it differently than some might.
I would go with the 2x myself. I have used 2x and 4x Leupold's in the past. For close quarter hunting I think I would go with the 2x.
A lot of this is preference.
In the end go with what you think you want!

I have purchased two .44s lately--a Contender 10" and an S&W 629 PC 7 1/2". I'm thinking seriously about a Trijicon on the 629. The T/C was used and has a Bausch and Lomb Elite 3000 on it. This thread is very good reading, tho.

Looks like Leupold variables and Ultra Dots got the most votes of confidence so those will be the ones I check out first. Last paycheck finally allowed me to pay for the gun, sadly I'm out of the state so I have to wait a few weeks to go play with it and try out the different scopes.

2 power Leupold, or a Ultra dot, good luck.

Nice target. Nothing better than a factory BFR and Ultradot sight. I've been having similar results with my BFR and Ultradot sight. What kind of rings are those?
