I know it's a sore subject for us, so I've debated posting this thread for a while...but then I figured it would make for an interesting discussion, so what the heck.

If you COULD hunt with a handgun in Canada...what would be your most desired hunt, and of course what would you use?

I've always thought woodland caribou would be a fun hunt. Probly use my 480R SRH.

Rod, too.

Since we're dreamin'...I'll go for the Trifecta with Jim Shockey. Yukon moose, Vancouver Island black bear, and Saskatchewan whitetail.

Gun choice - hmmm...my scoped 454 gets the nod as the longer range gun, and my 6" FA 475 wants redemption after missing a "gimme" last week on a pig, so she gets the nod for the hip.

All sound good so far...98 redline...the way my web browser was open I only saw "probably sask" I thought for sure you were gonna says saskwatch!

For me, Caribou sure would be tough to pass up but I think I'd have to go for the Muskox with the 44 SBHH and some cast!

I have been married to a Canadian for going on 24 years. Her family has a large ranch in Alberta abd her folks live in Victoria. I would hunt Black bear in BC with my 45bisley hunter. Elk and moose with my 475 linebaugh that is being built and also the 475 on a polar bear and musk ox. The BFR 45-70 for moose.

Just to go and hunt there would be awesome. Since its a dream I would want moose, caribou, and sheep. And for sure the deer, and with the dreaming I would use my contender with my 30/30 ackley and it would kill great ;).

I would love to hunt moose with the .480, I've read the regs. and even talked to a Candian attorney to get a permit to hunt with a handgun. He said I didn't have a snowballs chance.....

And polar bear last I heard they shut it down again thanks to the lies of Gore and his minions. I just saw on tv the Bering sea for the past three years has been colder than ever recorded with the ice pack coming further south than they have ever seen but yet the polar bears are having to use sun block and wear sunglasses and next we need to send life rafts so when all their ice melts away they won't drown.

It is a dream. Remember it was the liberals that ruined Canada. It will never come back.
I have friends there and when they are laid off from work, they get paid by the government to stay home.
A bow that costs $80 in the states goes for $1000 in Canada.
People pay and pay and pay.
Lack of guns in Canada only keeps the government safe. But those on the dole will never go against their free stuff.
Long live the Queen!
Obama is doing it here because there are so many sucking from the government teat.
If you want guns in Canada, get rid of the government.

And we'd rather have you!!! Might as well keep your bucks in the USA.
There are soeme nice things about Alaska for non-residents. For most species guides are not required (I know goats, sheep, brown, & grizzly bear are exceptions. Muskox & buffalo I'm not sure). Handguns are no problem. There are no shooting hours (if you can see your sights/crosshairs & the critter you are good to go. Migratory birds have shooting hours).
BUT, by far the country itself is the greatest thing. BUT, hunting can be tough! There is not a moose behind every tree. Not a legal one anyway. In our area with thousands of square miles there were 35 moose legaly killed last season (that's a 37 day season) so I wouldn't recomend you hunt my back yard. But there are plenty of areas in the state where things aren't like that. Remember, it's about 2.5x the size of Texas with more coastline that the entire continental US.

By the way, I've never lived in Canada but have drove through many times. AMAZING place!! Some great people. I have always enjoyed my time there & been well treated. However, I have some personal phobia that always makes me feel uncomfortable in foregin countries. I feel like I have no rights & am at the mercy of what ever government it might be. I love the USA!

Caribou and Black bear with my 41 Mag. would be nice. I'd definitely try to have a 375 Winchester barrel built for my contender and try it also.

Randy, The Birddog.

I'd rather be lost in the woods with my 41 Mag. Than found at home without it.

I would also LOVE to hunt in Alaska, but the travel costs alone are steep! I will get there some day none-the-less, if God is willing.

It would be great if Canada were open to handgunners. Moose would be the first species on my hit-list with my FA83 454 casull and 300gr Swift A-Frames pushed hard.

I would most likely try to go somewhere in Ontario so the driving cost would not be that bad. It would actually make a moose hunt affordable and readily available for me in the near future.

Always fun to dream isn't it?

If I could hunt here with a handgun I would use exclusively for everything with them. It sucks big time that we can't use them for hunting. Hell, there are people here that think long guns are evil let alone handguns. That's why alot of my $$$ are spent suporting the USA economy instead of ours. On the bright side I've met many great people over the years in the US that are now considered my friends .

It has been years since I discussed this with soem people from Canada and did some research so this may or may not be true at present, but I believe that there is a way to handgun hunt in Canada. My scheme was to use a gun that was not defined as illegal. A gun that is 26" long meets the legal requirements IIRC. You would just have to put a 22" barrel on your Contender, Encore or perhaps use a rear grip SP. That was the loophole I came up with. Now you would have to talk to the Canadian authorities about this one, but as I said I believe that guns greater than 26" overall are legal regardless of the type of buttstock, grip they may have.

This was my plan to get a world record handgun stone sheep, but I will now let someone else chase this one down.
