I have been considering mounting an optical sight on my Desert Eagle .44.

I can't see well enough to hunt with iron sights anymore and so I have scopes on my handguns, except the DE. I was thinking about this particular sight because the DE is already bulky and this sight is small, compact and reported to be accurate and durable (which it should be given the cost).

I hunt deer sometimes in and around some pretty thick cedar thickets and shots would be short.

Was wondering if any of you all had any experience with this particular sight or if you have some other recommendations.

Thanks

I haven't used an Aimpoint on either of my DE's, but have gone through a couple of the old Leupold Gilmore red dots as the slide recoiling back into the barrel on both guns kept taking chips out of the glass which eventually led to complete breakage. If you have the newer model with the picatinny style slots, you might be able to use an Eotech or similar that uses a "plastic" lens instead of glass...

Aimpoint makes great scopes. Had one on my .460 with great results. I am trying a Trijicon on my 629 and will let you know how it does after a trip to the farm this weekend.

Check out doctors optic red dot sight. It was designed to be mounted on slides of 45's. hey are very tough. They are less expensive then the H1's. But aimpoint does make some tuff scopes.

The J-Point is another to consider; mine have stood up so far on a .500 WE and my .475 Linebaugh.

Thanks for the tip Gregg. I like the smaller size of that sight and the smaller price as compared to the Aimpoint.

Seems to me if it can work in the dovetail of a .45 ACP that it should handle a fixed barrel Desert Eagle. I have no data to substantiate that, it just seems right.

You can get a doctors optic with the dove tail already part of the base. CDNN has them on sale for 249.00. The US military uses them on their long rifles as mounted on the side. They are pretty darn tuff!

Yeah, an Aimpoint or Trijicon RMR will work best. Costs more but quality isn't cheap.

I guess it probably depends on how much you want to spend and how you would like the sight to settle in on your frame – both for looks and function.

The Aimpoint H1 & T1 are basically the same and will take as much recoil as you’re able to withstand and it doesn’t sit up too tall either. However, I have both and use both (T-1) but I prefer the Leupold DeltaPoint for both revolver and pistol.

If you really like the red dot on a bottom feeder such as a 1911, you might want to consider milling your frame, as that puppy will sit right down on the slide and when you bring the pistol up from your holster it’ll be right there where your rear sight use to be – not wiggling & wobbling to find the delta or dot. You can also mill a dovetail for a backup iron sight in front of the red dot if you so desire.

Here’s a picture of my 1911 milled slide with a deltapoint attached and a look at the sight picture.

Mine has held up fine. If you need something compact that can take a beating, they are the way to go.

However, I prefer Ultra Dots, if you have enough space to mount them.
