My fathers job allows him to meet locals every day. he is always asking farmers that come to the shop if they have land and allow hunting. so far this year two have said yes to chucks. we looked at both and the one looks very good. 600+ acre 370 head dairy farm. they want all the chucks dead. we scouted a few days ago and are going to set up tomorrow early. the one spot will offer shots from 30-350 with great backstops and a flat level lane to go prone in. going to take the 6BRX striker and see what we can do. 105 A-Max at 2680 should do it!

well we spotted a couple but they are spooky. give a go again this coming week. the 4th being in the middle of the week should give me some time to go

had at it again today. we have been having some killer heat lately so it was nice to sit out under some cloud cover and a slight breeze today. meet my father at 6 at their place. finished a cup of coffee and drove to the farm about 10 mins away. set up on a hill this time. our area of NY was affected by the glaciers that came through millions of years ago. they left ridges between lake Ontario and the top of the fingerlakes and also dug in and formed the lakes. these ridges and hills all run north south and are quite steep. but they also make for good hunting and backstops.

first chuck showed up at 7:30 right below us at 225 yards. no shot due to angles and buildings. watched him a while eating the beans. once he left our sight we looked behind us into the alfalfa field. I spotted one and pointed dad in the right direction. he was using an older heavy barrel 700 in 243 that shoots very well. he snuck to the crest of the hill and I ranged it at 130 yards. I stayed back and was watching the chuck go up and down then we lost it for a bit. another came out on the east side of the hill where we were looking before so I start to watch that one. I look back to see dad settling in then hear the thud of the rifle through my muffs and see the bullet impact. was not sure if it was a hit or miss. chuck two took off. I grab the 17HMR we carry for close/finishing shots and go down to the field. DOA female the impact was red mist-
87 v-max really does a number on them!
I pick it up and head back up slope. dads is pointing to the east field. I book it back to the top (bad idea) and see the chick again in the corner. my turn. I move to the crest and set up the. I forgot to grab my rear bag today so a combination of my phone and rangefinder did the trick. glad I put the adjustable foot under my grip. so heart is pounding by now. the range was 270 yards -7% angle. made the scope correction and set back up on him. settled in and squeezed. chuck takes a few steps then stops. dad did not see the impact nor did I, ok load another take out .5 MOA and hold on his head again. bang! see dust fly and put the scope on him agian. little tail twitch then nothing. sweet two chucks in 5 mins!



got them home and quartered and in the freezer they went. Great day!!!

Nice shootin! I bet that kind of hunting is a blast! Enjoy that time with your dad. I miss rambling thru the deers woods with my old man.
