I was invited to SW Texas with a friend that was going to hunt Black Buck, Axis deer and pigs. I told him I would go, drive and cook if I could roam the hills and shoot pigs with my pistols. He laughed about the part with my pistols but said OK. We left early Wed morning, July 4, and drove 10 hours from Oklahoma City to Campwood, TX , West and North of San Antonio.
It rained 5 inches the first night and the ranch owner said the pigs would be on the move early. I got a four wheeler from the ranch owner since he had to tend to some business in town and directions to a clearing about a mile from camp. Parked the ATV and walked to the area the owner discribed. I'm glad the trails have markers because he has 2900 acres on nothing but cactus, mesquite and live oak with rocks everywhere.
Set up in the dark and waited. I took my Contender in 6.5JDJ with a Weaver 2.5x8 scope, Sierra 120grn Pro Hunters and tripod shooting stick with stadium seat for padding.
About 0730 this pig came out of the brush and started to cross the opening. Shot him at 120yd and he went about 20 yds. High Double lung and a nice size exit hole. 125 lb and some good cutters. I'm going to boil the head and clean it.
I had a great time and was invited back this fall. I took my Apache Machine XP in 284 but never took it out of the case. Never had a place to stretch it out.
Mike

Mark, I just talked with the Ranch owner last night and he said that our group was one of the nicest and easiest groups to get along with he had ever had there. I asked him if he had us mixed up with someone else. HAH
He said I should come back in the fall and we can get a game plan for finding more pigs to shoot.
I WILL take the XP100 in 284 by Apache Machine. I want to test the 140 Berger VLD Hunters on some pork.

Good show! There is some wide open for you, what a view.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Congrats, Hawkeye. Beauty of a gun I might add. See any rattlers? That country is full of 'em and you are mighty brave to be setting up for hogs in the dark in July!

Go get 'em Mike! How do you like the Sierra's in your JDJ?

I've got some 140 VLD's ready for my Apache 6.5/284 rig...to be ready for delivery soon

Hawkeye, Those were very kind remarks from the rancher. Good show! Hope you get to use that Apache XP this fall. I'm anxious to hear the success stories. Best of luck

Nice work, Hawkeye! He does have some nice cutters -- perfect for a skull mount!

Good work! I've never shot a pig but it sure looks like fun
