I was invited to SW Texas with a friend that was going to hunt Black Buck, Axis deer and pigs. I told him I would go, drive and cook if I could roam the hills and shoot pigs with my pistols. He laughed about the part with my pistols but said OK. We left early Wed morning, July 4, and drove 10 hours from Oklahoma City to Campwood, TX , West and North of San Antonio.
It rained 5 inches the first night and the ranch owner said the pigs would be on the move early. I got a four wheeler from the ranch owner since he had to tend to some business in town and directions to a clearing about a mile from camp. Parked the ATV and walked to the area the owner discribed. I'm glad the trails have markers because he has 2900 acres on nothing but cactus, mesquite and live oak with rocks everywhere.
Set up in the dark and waited. I took my Contender in 6.5JDJ with a Weaver 2.5x8 scope, Sierra 120grn Pro Hunters and tripod shooting stick with stadium seat for padding.
About 0730 this pig came out of the brush and started to cross the opening. Shot him at 120yd and he went about 20 yds. High Double lung and a nice size exit hole. 125 lb and some good cutters. I'm going to boil the head and clean it.
I had a great time and was invited back this fall. I took my Apache Machine XP in 284 but never took it out of the case. Never had a place to stretch it out.
