I've never owned or shot one but the guys that have them have had nothing but good to say about them. The only thing I could think of that may be negative may be factory ammo availability and I don't know what brass availability is like.

On what platform?

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Encore. Could also be put in a bolt gun, though.

Hornady makes ammo for it....they developed it jointly with Steyr

I know they make it but it's probably not something you would pick up at your local hardware store but if you roll your own or stock up it's not a big deal as long as you don't leave them at home when you go hunting.

yeah he's got one in a Competitor that he really likes, it seems like there were a couple guys that had them in Encores too.

I've HAD a 14" (plus brake) Encore barrel and a 15" (plus brake) Encore barrel and I presently have a 15" (plus brake) XP-100 in .376 Steyr. The .376 Steyr shoots the 270 grain Hornady about 200 fps faster than my .375 JDJ and is about 100 fps slower than the .375-06 JDJ from what I can gather.

My XP-100 shoots the 270 grain Hornady at 2300 fps and shoots flat out to a little over 200 yards. The only disadvantage that I can think of is ammo and brass availability. It is a handload only cartridge IMHO but so is the .375 JDJ and .375-06 JDJ.

Hope this helps...

I have one in the MOA w/14" + brake. It is a hammer. I shoot mostly 225grn Hornady SP's but it loves the Accubond 270grn with lots of Varget. I don't see a problem with ammo. I always load all of my wildcats anyway. Brass is easy to find. Hornady makes it and is avaialable most supply houses.
I was a 375JDJ fan and shot it all of the time until I got my .376 Steyr. I still shoot the JDJ in the Contender and take it sometimes where I'm in a lot of brush. It is a little lighter and quicker to get on target.
I'm using mine for deer this year and pigs if they show.
The cartridge is very accurate.

I love my 376 Steyr!! I have never had a problem finding brass. Bullet(component) selection is off the hook!! Anything that can be shot in the H&H can be shot in the Steyr. It is similar in power to the 375/284 & the 375/350 Mag, but in a factory round. If I could only choose 1 round to hunt with, this one would be it. In my Competitor I would compare the recoil to a stout 44 Mag. Recoil is NOT an issue! I really like the 300 gr. Norma Oryx bullets in the Steyr.

I have a Steyr in an Encore. Only killed deer and groundhogs with it out to 200 yards simply because I have a .375/.284 XP that outclasses it. A friend killed a brown beak last year in AK with it. No problem. Advantage: factory round, compacy package. Disadvantage: hard to find ammo or brass-took me 6 months to get brass. I'd tackle anything short of the thick skinned dangerous game with it and a 260 AB, and the big boys with solids.
