Well, as some of you will recall, I've been on the doorstep of getting a 460 a few different times. Well the time has finally come to make that purchase! No family emergencies, no truck breakdowns, the money is available, and the time has come!!! But instead of getting the smith and wesson like I had the first time, I am now entertaining the thought of a thompson center encore. However, I don't know if that frame is strong enough for large bore calibers. The 460 will probably be the smallest caliber I put on it.
Will this be okay or do I need to go to a different model??
Thanks for the help guys!!

it will easily handle the 460 and bigger, my primary barrel is a 300 Win Mag and I just recently finished my 458 Lott barrel.

Seriously though- the Encore CAN handle big bores? I don't want to be concerned with stressing the frame and yada yada yada...
Is that 458L on an Encore Rod??

Set up right??? What do you mean... accessories?? About 40-lbs in weight to hold it down, a sandbag draped over the barrel, a fish-gill .50 BMG-type muzzle brake, and plinking loads with light bullets.

Set up right??? What do you mean... accessories?? Whit's on the right path... 1. Pachmayr Magnum grips 2. Fish gill or Holland QD brake 3. And a heavy contour barrel helps!

OK, I got a frame coming but it has no barrel. So i got ahold of Bullberry since they gauruntee their accuracy, and they can make me a barrel. She said they had two blanks. One was 15" and the other was 15 1/2", and i could pick any length up to that size. I opted for 12" and a full 1" bull barrel. Crap!! I forgot about a muzzle break- but that can still be changed.
I don't know SQUAT about rings and bases, so when she asked me which ones I wanted, I had no clue and told her I would get back with her on that.
So I need some suggestions on bases so she knows how many holes to drill and tap. I guess some are four and some are six hole. It won't go into production for about two weeks, and ANY of these options can be changed up until that point.
HELP PLEASE!!!

So I need some suggestions on bases so she knows how many holes to drill and tap. As long as they are going to drill them you may as well have them drill 6, but I have not had any problems with 4 holes either.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Alright guys I had to go get scoped from both ends this morning and when I got back to this thread this evening after sleeping off the anesthesia I started choking on my gatorade.
First yes Raptor the Lott is on an Encore and mine is set up with the Pachmayrs, good brake but I built it on a standard taper 45-70 barrel. The gun is violent but if you use a good grip on it it will push you back more than trying to snap your wrist like Whitworths 50AK, of course my right wrist doesn't bend that way anymore so I guess it might just flip me over on my head. I think 12" will probably be a good length on the barrel and since they are drilling it I'd go with the six screw but without knowing the specific options they are giving you I can't speak to which one in particular to recommend.

My .50 Alaskan doesn't try to snap your wrist. At 4-lbs, it tries to rip your arm off and embed the front sight into your skull. Sorry, just giving a more accurate description of what it is like to shoot that revolver.

You know Rod, when they were talking about you having some screws loose, that could be taken literally!
I mean, shooting that .458 Lott could actually tear out some of the screws in your wrist and back!!!

So I need some suggestions on bases so she knows how many holes to drill and tap. As long as they are going to drill them you may as well have them drill 6, but I have not had any problems with 4 holes either. Yes; go with six, can't hurt and you may want to consider the T-Sob base from SSK. They also use much harder industrial strength screws. Actually the screw strength is a huge factor. Some of the blued screws that come with some of these bases are really soft. That could be a lot of the reason s4s4u and others haven't had problems with 4 screw bases on the heavy recoilers.

Well i have had a 460 encore for about 4 years now, and the thompson center barrel sucked couldnt get it to shoot and had a gunsmith tell the chamber was out of concentricity and sent it back with a letter from the gunsmith. Just got a MGM full bull barrel with built in brake and it shoots great the little that i have gotten to shoot it. Problem now is i keep breaking forends. its at the gunsmith getting a recoil lug put on the barrel and glass bedded into the forend. Crossing my fingers this stops the forend from breaking and the screws bending. Great to shoot though
