I wish to kill a turkey with a handgun but the powers that be in MN don't seem to understand. So, if I killed one with one of these, holding nothing but the grip, could I call it a "handgun" turkey? Bipod?

I'm gonna have to do some wrist excersizes ;-) What say ye?

Works for me also. Pennsylvania states shotgun is legal for spring turkey. No where does it say it had to be fired from the shoulder.

Good idea. No bipod though. It should be rested on the knee and fired with the stiffest 3 1/2" load you can find.

I have fired 3" buckshot off the hip with this gun and didn't find it any fun.
I'm thinking: close up (no choke on mine), high brass #6's or standard turkey load, gun rested over a log or stump with sandbag or pack ala Contender style. Warm up the fryer.

Turkey from the hip, still tastes the same.

OK, I'll be the Grinch That Stole Christmas. IMHO, hell no that's not a handgun. Show me a PUMP handgun somewhere in existence... plus, IMHO and opinion of judges, legal handgun barrels are 16" and less. Whatsmore, here in Alabama and likely most other states, the man in green and sometimes referred to as the Boogeyman must state that it "works for him" which in this case ain't gonna happen. Wish you well, tho!

The only state that I am aware of that restricts a handgun barrel's maximum length is New York. I know many who have custom XP's and Strikers with barrels in excess of 16" in length. My first Contender pistol came with a 16-1/4" barrel. What's a couple of inches among friends ;-)

Illinois and Iowa 16"+ is a big no-no, but I agree with you--what's a few inches as long as you don't get caught!?

Get caught doing what? There is nothing illegal about using a Mossberg 500 for turkey. The discussion was whether the folks on this board would consider it a handgun kill if used as a handgun, not about the legality of an 18" barreled handgun.

Hmmm. NC laws don't allow pistols for turkey, regardless of barrel length.

But...in the same fashion that gun owners can take a Savage or Remington rifle, put a rear grip stock on it and leave the barrel length long enough to clear a total overall length of 26", they're good with a "rifle" action in a pistol platform.

Heck my rear grip Weatherby isn't called a pistol by the manufacturer, but rather a CFP (Compact Firing Platform).

Really gray area - just depends on how your warden WANTS to interpret the local regs.

Yes, but I wouldn't want to shoot one. I also have the 12ga. 24" barrel that I use to use (with shoulder stock). It's the worst gun I've ever fired (recoil), and I've owned three M835 3.5".

We can use 20 gauge now so I might have to look into that prospect.

It's a t/c custom shop 20" turkey barrel. With the factory grip and supplied choke tube, it's 26 1/8" oal. I tried a pacmyre grip, but it's 1/8" too short; have to stick with factory grip.

No, it's not a handgun. It's a shotgun under NFA regs. The "caliber" size also would make it a "Destructive device" if it was considered a handgun, subject to the same tax / licensing as full autos, etc.
