In celebration of your new book, I went out and bought me a .457GNR....

It's a .475Max necked down to .458. It was designed to give .45-70 ballistics from a 7.5" tube. case are made by cutting .45-70 cases to 1.610" and running through the custom die set from Reeder. This one has a 5-shot cylinder on a stretch frame Ruger, a 5" bull barrel, and 'v' notch, gold bead sights. The sight blade on both the front and rear sights are changeable.

They called Russ Seyfried's 45 Colt a "short 458". I guess that one really is!
Cool gun to say the least.

It was designed to give .45-70 ballistics from a 7.5" tube. Holy! Just what I want in a 4" gun. Jeez man. Pretty piece...
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I remember I once refused to fire a monster hand cannon at the range and all I could say was "your a better man then me"..... Good luck with your new 475 Russ. James

I own a 14" (12" barrel + 2" comp).45-70 that I used to hunt deer and black bear with. Wound up with several pieces of .45-70 brass, some jacketed bullets and 2 .45-70 moulds, 1 for a 340gr and 1 for a 405gr, RFN. I'm going 'green' and recycling.

I can't tell is the brass bottlenecked or just tapered to .458

The ones in the picture are neither. Waiting on the dies to form them, but from looking at a photo of the cartridge on Gary's website and looking/measureing the trimmed cases, my best guess is a taper.

That will be alot better than necked, which is why I mentioned set back issues. A taper cartridge should avoid that.

The dies arrived Tuesday and I was able to load some of the brass for testing. Out of the 20 cases I had cut to size, I ruined 2 getting the flaring die set and wound up with 18 loaded rounds. Today I drove out to a friend's 100yd range, marked off 25yds and set up a target. The first five 'offhand' were high right, only 1 hit the target backing. Adjusting for windage, the next 5 were high, but on the backing. One more windage adjustment and an elevation adjustment and I was 'on'. I then walked back to the bench and shot the last 3 at a dirt clod on the berm. Hit it once out of the 3 shots. John Taffin stated in his article on TESTING the .475MAXIMUM that abut 35 rounds at a setting was all he wanted to shoot. I concurr!

The load I was testing was 34grs IMR4227 with a 345gr cast .458 bullet and CCI 200 primers in a cut down (1.6").45-70 case.

I'll say it again - Nice hammer Russ! I shot today as well - and got shellshocked by a lot less gun...Recovered, but had to "tighten up" and concentrate hard to do so!
