Just picked up a new redhawk in 45 LC. I'm heading to my brother's in Carey,NC and then a hog hunt. I'm looking for the best load to smack a big hog down right now! I do reload but haven't with 45LC, I reload 44,45-70,6.5JDJ and 454 Casull. A few suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This same gun will be with me in the Maine woods for bear in Sept.Thanks.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I've been using Grizzly Cartridge's 335 grain WLNs. They run right about 1,300 fps from my 5 1/2-inch Ruger Bisley, and I have so far only shot one hog with this load but he went 250-lbs and the effects were immediate.

335 CPB over 20.5grs H110 lit by a 155 primer. 1100fps from my 4 5/8 barrel gun. Shoots 1" groups at 70 yards with 2x scope on board. reflex264

He was still breathing when I walked up to him, but at the shot he hit terra firma like he was clobbered over the head with a pallet full of bricks.

Any good constructed bullet 280grs and higher traveling 1000fps+ should handle the job.Placement of said projectile would have more of an impact for "smack a big hog down right now!" than anything else, ime.

i use the win 296 and the 300gr xtps for handgun hunting here in Ohio,21.6 gr,wlpp.starline brass, out of my 7.5 inch blackhawk im pushing over 1250 fps and have taken whitetails out to 100, although most shots are at 75 yrds or less up here we have thick woods,i have caught them crossing feilds and power cuts and slammed em with a 300 grainer,i set for 80 yrd zero gives me dead on at 100 as well,i wont take a shot over 100 most times.Being as Ohio has the idiotic shotgun only law, i use my pistol, that slug gun beats heck out of me i can shoot my blackhawk all day and never get a flinch.Hogs in sth fla have been victims of my blackhawk 45. i shot more than a few when i lived in sth fla.Off the back of an airboat most times ,drt.never took a step.Along with a few big gators.
