Hello from Fernandina Beach Fl. I am new to this forum and handgun hunting. This year I have purchased 2 S&W model 29's 44 mags and a Ruger single six 22 Mag. I plan on using both this year for pigs and turkeys. I am building a M 29-3 that has a leupold on it already by adding a 10 5/8 in barrel and the Ruger came with a Laseraim red dot with a 9 1/2 in. Any preferences on 22 magnum ammo out there? I shot some Winchester supreme yesterday and it held a group for about six shots then was all over the paper. I have searched this forum and many other sites and found that CCI Mini Max 40 gr is getting a lot of good reviews, any thoughts?

There aren't that many choices for 22 Mag ammo and unfortunately the Ruger's don't seem to take advantage of the potential based on my experience. I would get a box of everything over time and figure out what the gun likes the best, just like you would with any other gun.

The Rugers will shoot LR ammo better than mag 99 times out of a 100 because LR ammo is actually smaller in diameter than mag by .003" and the bore on the ruger is bored for the smaller bullet. The mag actually uses a .223 dia bullet just like the centerfires.

Welcome...I've just recently acquired a 22mag myself. I haven't owned one in 20 years or so, but I started out with what worked for me back then: CCI's 40gr flat nose. I've only been able to shoot 6 rounds through my new revolver, but it showed promise. In a couple weeks, I'll do some in depth experimenting with different ammo. As stated above, from my experience, Rugers don't shoot the 22 mags very well.

I have played quite a bit with .22 magnums in revolvers, rifles and Contenders. On my .22 ammo shelf I have:

Federal .22 Win Mag 50 grain Jacketed Hollow Point
Federal Premium .22 Win Mag 30 grain Sierra JHP
Remington Premier .22 Win Mag 33 grain V-Max
CCI .22 WMR Maxi Mag + V HP
Winchester Supreme .22 Winchester Mag Jacketed Hollow Point
CCI .22 WMR Maxi Mag Speer Gold Dot HP
CCI Maxi Mag .22 WMR Hollow point
Super X .22 Mag Solid

Some are a few years old; my suggestion is buy as many as you can and try 'em all; in my experience each particular gun I tried liked a certain color the best; I did not find that one size fits all. As always, in my experience, it depends on the gun.

I believe you mean CCI Mini MAG (not Max) which is a .22 Long Rifle cartridge, NOT a .22 Magnum cartridge.

So, for the record, which round are you intending to ask about? They are not interchangeable; in fact the Ruger .22 Single Six, if bought new, comes with two cylinders: one for each (different) cartridge: .22 Magnum and .22 Long Rifle. Each is intended to be fired in it's respective cylinder; although both (obviously) use the same barrel.

I posted after a very long day of typing. It is the Mini Mag 22 magnum I was talking about. I do have the .22 Single six convertable with 2 cylinders.

I understand. CCI uses Maxi Mag to designate the magnum cartridge, and Mini Mag for the Long Rifle.

try some Federal bulk 22LR ammo and see how if groups compared to the mag loads. I think you'll see a big difference, after that if the mag is what you "need" just experiment to see what does the best. I just bought a 1960's vintage Rohm revolver in 22 mag because I wanted a dedicated mag gun. Probably the best shooting 22 mag revolver on the market is the FA but you'll pay for it.

I 've been using the Hornady 30gr.V-max,it'll shoot respectable groups good enough for shooting coons ,groundhogs, coyotes at 50yards ,I haven't shot it any further than this but most of my hunting is woods hunting so 50 yards is plentygood for me-john

I've had EXCELLENT luck with the CCI 30gr TNT in BOTH my Ruger 77/22 and Ruger Single-six conv. TNT's are hard to find around here but, I shop Midway & Natchezss.com for the best deals. VERY accurate and it is explosive on groundhogs!!!

My 6" K-22 really likes Winchester 40gr JHP while my S&W 4" J-frame prefers CCI 40gr JHP. Shoot all the different makes of 22 mag ammo you can buy from the bench and one of them will stand out from the rest. This is a good underated cartridge. Just ask Dick Metcalf. Best of luck and good hunting, James
PS-for what its worth, anyone that shoots a 22mag in a handgun is OK in my book......

My Ruger 'single-six' likes the Winchester Dyna-Point. You'll just have to try differant brands/bullet weights in yours to see what IT likes.
Each gun is different.
