I'd like to start hunting coyotes and bobcats with a revolver and will have to use factory ammo. Caliber suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Maximum distance would be 100 yards. Minimal pelt damage would be a plus. Also, would a fixed 2x scope be the proper choice for this purpose?

I would suggest a dedicated .22 magnum.

I was very lucky to take a coyote at close range using a S&W J frame in 22mag a number of years ago.....

Ruger has their new 9 shot 22mag. Good luck finding one though.

I would suggest a .38spec/.357mag. A .22mag will work, but it's often times 'iffy' out of a revolver.

I have always lusted at the 32 h&r magnum, would be a great for yotes or the 327 mag, Alot of choices from single action to double, a a blackhawk bisley would be nice. A little more punch when you need it, Shoot a hard cast and you should have very little pelt damage, JMHO

Play Dirty Harry with 'em (44 mag).

Russell is right on in my coyote hunting experience, as far as the .22 mag. IFFY at best, but will work; and good advice as Kral says a "dedicated .22 mag."

I like Seasons44's answer the best: a 32 caliber revolver with a 2X scope would be my choice for a dedicated coyote revolver.

A .32 happens to be my favorite. My #1 coyote revolver is a Ruger 'Buckeye' in .32WCF (.32-20).



I also use a .327mag in a Ruger 5.5" Blackhawk and .32mag in either at times. I always recommend a .38/.357 because of availability of firearms and ammunition. Something to consider if you do a lot of traveling. (.32's are sometimes hard to find unless you reload.)

I've seen dogs run 30 mph dragging half their insides. Find a one shot, one kill caliber. I use a 30 Herrett with good results. In a revolver, I would choose a good blackhawk in 357.

Another thought would be a Ruger Blackhawk in 30 Carbine.

I would stick to the 30 calibers and up personally. You mentioned bobcat and as rare as they are (at least around here) I want to be sure I get the one I shoot at.

I think the 327 mag would be an excellent yotey round.

The Ruger Blackhawk in 30 M1 carbine has worked great for me for some years now. Speer 100 gr "plinkers", 110 gr Speer HP, 110-115 gr flat nose cast - work the best, and the 110 rn soft point. Can get them for decent prices on the used market.

I own a couple of 327 mag revolvers. They shoot quite flat out to 100 yds. The FA is very accurate to that distance. It would be a good one for your use. My Ruger BH 5 1/2" has a fastfire dot on it. I would not hesitate to try a coyote at 100 yds with it either.

Assuming buying Ammo I'd opt for 357 first and 30 carbine second. 30 carbine is ballistically identical to the 327, but can be bought in bulk far cheaper.

Looks like it's going to be the 30 carbine, 327 mag or 357 mag. I like the ballistics of the carbine and the 357. I'm wondering though if the carbine would cause too much damage to a bobcat pelt. I couldn't find any ballistic info for the 327 other than it's supposed to be a really flat shooting round.

I have a Coyote Classic revolver chambered in 218 Mashburn Bee. It will cleanly take coyotes at 100 yards and beyond. It is available in 218 Bee if you don't reload.

I read an article once, can't remember where. But they were talking about Freedom Arms putting out a revolver or developing a revolver to fire a .224 caliber round, claimed it was a good coyote taker. Has anybody heard of this or did they not take it any farther? I haven't been able to find it after I read it so not sure?

Freedom Arms did make a few, .327mag necked down to .224. John Taffin did an article on them. Don't know if they still do or not.

Gregg, the Coyote Special is a Gary Reeder custom. Besides the .218's, you can get a Hornet or Gary's propriotory .24 or .25 Hornet. Both are based off of the K-Hornet.

I shoot a 40 grain Sierra Varminter at 2200 fps. pushed by AA1680. It will group around 1" at 50 yards.

Freedom Arms still makes the 224-32. A friend of mine in Arkansas has one. It is a well made gun and shoots excellent. He gets about the same velocity from his as I get from mine. He killed a nice Muntjac a few years ago with his.

The fastest, flatest and most accurate shooting revolver its what needed. That was the original reason I bought a Freedom model 83 in 357......

Now if I coulda gotten an autographed copy of that pic, I woulda bought that gun!

The carbine will cause very little damage with the proper bullets. The 327 federal magnum is a 30 carbine with a rim, straight walls and a .311 bullet. Case capacity is the same, both work in similar pressure ranges as well as shooting similar diameter bullets at similar weights. The main advantage with the carbine round is that ruger offers the blackhawk in it with a 7 1/2" barrel for a little more zip over the 327 offering as well as cheaper ammo availability. The 30 carbine and 327 fed will keep up with the light weight 357 rounds and do it with a lot higher sectional density and better ballistic coefficient.

My mortal enemy is loading the 30 carbine. I hate the case, it is hard to reload. I would love to have a 22 hornet.

Great thread ... I'm actually having my wife look at a .30 cal revolver for coyote hunting. I love to coyote hunt and do alot of it. But aside from using T/C's , have never used a revolver on them. So, it's good to know that the .30 doesn't blow them apart as I keep fur.

I've found the trick with loading 30 carbine for the ruger revolver is to use 32-20 brass in 30 carbine dies.

I just went after and looked at their site...the process of forming is a little intimidating.
