Was wondering what everybody feelings are on retention choices for hip holsters,
First being a standard DA revolver, Whats your choice?
Second, A 1911 field holster, whats your choice and do you feel the need for a hammer strap?

If the barrel isn't too long I like the Blackhawk or Fobus Kydex holsters. They have a screw adjustment for tension and are very secure. For the longer guns I make my own and wet mold them to the gun, have not felt the need for a retainer strap as I can turn the holster upside down and the gun stays put.The gun comes free with a slight tug.If I feel the need for more security I use a strap and snap. Most of my holsters are crossdraw for my hunting guns.

I like a strap. I think it's just a good idea to have a positive "blocker" to prevent the handgun from slipping out. That said, in the event that you forget to snap it shut, often times holsters made with a retention strap don't have enough tension on their own to hold the pistol in place. I have dropped a couple as a result of this.

I have dropped a couple as a result of this. Me too. Scared the bejesus out of me when the gun fell out and landed on the ground hammer first. Retention straps all around.

A strap with a snap on all my field holsters. Had one with a hammer thong once and didn't care for it at all. My 1911 holster has a thumbbreak snap.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

if you don't mind kydex, get one of the Blackhawk SERPA models for the 1911 as they're about as reliable as you can get with no need for a secondary retention strap, even in a combat zone... The buttons are actually very hard to operate from the front meaning it's very difficult for a would-be attacker to get the gun out. I trust my life to mine every day...

Thanks for all the responces, been considering adding another holster to the collection, So right now spit balling ideas around.
It will be leather, not a fan of kydex for a field holster, I find it too noisy,

I don't think you can go wrong with a Simply Rugged holster.

Ok, I love the 7x holster, but this is a question and a concern,
Due to my build I have a small waist, I have always looked at more of a cant(improper spelling) as a benifit due to my build and allows me to have it positioned slighly behind my hip, and greater stablitly for the weapon.
Am I wrong with this?

I had a custom cross draw holster and belt made with a thumb break for my Colt Anacondaon, works great
