After reading the great reports concerning UltraDots, I acquired an UltraDot4 for my Ruger SBH. Prior to mounting the UltraDot, I had a Leupold scope on the gun and it shot great. Purely shooting paper it grouped well out to 100 yards. I kept the same base but had to add some 30mm rings for the UltraDot.

I am frustrated, I am not able to get two shots within a foot of one another at 50 yards using the same loads that this gun shoots so well. What am I doing wrong? Is the unit defective? Repeated calls to them go unanswered. The unit is now off and the Leupold going back on. I am thinking about returning it. I bought the dot because of the ability to use it without scope blackout.

Ive been reading lots of good reviews on them but nothing on customer service, hope it works out for you. If the base and rings were tight not much else it could be. Did you get to shoot it with the leupold after?

Are you the original owner of that UltraDot?

Rod, too.

I am the original owner of what I believe to be a new unit. I wondered that as well. I am not ruling out that this unit is a factory refurb.

As for the bases and rings, I checked and rechecked them. The Leupold is not on the gun yet.

I could not believe my eyes when I first shot it. I have shot about 30 rounds through it...nothing resembling groups at all. Some three feet apart. I have the dot set as low as possible and at the smallest setting.

the problem could be your adjusting too much, what I mean by that ,it is about ,I'm guessing half of what you would move/clicks compared to a regular scope,I went through that when I went to red dots-adjusting too much,I think most scopes are 1/4 inch for each click and the red dots I believe are 1/2 inch per click-john

John, the groups are without making adjustments between shots. For instance, shot one was a foot high and several inches left. Shot two would be almost two low and way right. Shot three might be close to the target. The only variable in the equation is the 30mm rings. If it is not the rings the unit has to be defective.

It is certainly possible to get a lemon from any of them. Have you tried returning it to the retail outlet where you bought it?

OPer, you didn't mention the magnifacation of your Leupold but, red dots don't have any? Could it be, your too used to things a bit larger than they really are while sighting your gun? Also, red dots seem to bloom(flare out) more when eyes get tired. Every manufacturer has had lemons. I believe Ultra's are made in our favorite, Japan. A long way to service.
I have an Ultradot4 on my S&W 629-4 Classic and works very well where I hunt(deep timber where shots are close to 100 yrds).

Steve, Good points. I shoot a few red dots on AR-15's and am somewhat familiar with them. Have never shot one on a pistol though. The leupold is a 2x and I shoot it out to 100 yards. I shot the Ultradot mainly at 50 yards but also tried it at 25. Nothing was close. I am sending it back and closing the chapter on Ultradots.

Keep us posted, JLB; let us know how it all turns out; as to their customer service, etc. And what you end up as the final sight so to speak for that rig.

Sounds to me like you got a bad one. It happens with all products sooner or later. I am not going to tell what you should or shouldn't do, but those sights are plenty good for accurate 100 yard shooting. I've been using them for years and they have exhibited great accuracy -- or rather they have allowed for great accuracy.
