I have an 18" Dewey rod that works well for the T/C, XP and Striker pistols but is still a tad long for the short short guns. I put my own handle on the third section of a 3 piece rod that does those well, it is about a foot long.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I use the three piece rods (good steel ones). Thus, I can use one section, or two or all three. Works for me on revolvers, single shots & rifles.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

Doesn't the steel mess up the rifeling, or is that just an old wives tale?

The idea of the steel rod is that while it "can" damage the rifling, especially around the crown if you let it continually rub, it will not allow grit and carbon to imbed in the rod effectively creating a file. The steel on steel is less damaging than the embedded carbon in a brass or aluminum rod.
I normally use a muzzle protector (little brass cone with a hole in the center) so the steel never touches the barrel anyway.

For quick removal of powder residue the bore snake works well for me. For removing copper fouling still have to use the cleaning rods.
